Pesto is one of the most copied sauces in the world. And one of the most misunderstood.

True Pesto Genovese is made with basil grown specifically in Liguria; the DOP designation protects the name because no other basil tastes quite the same.

Combined with pine nuts, Parmigiano, Pecorino, garlic, and cold-pressed olive oil, it is blended gently to preserve the colour and the fragrance.

The version in most supermarkets bears little resemblance to the real thing.

We stock pesto made with Genoese basil DOP, including an organic, gluten-free option. The difference is in the first smell when you open the jar.

Everyone has their thing.

The pasta shape they always come back to.

The cheese they put on everything.

The one Italian ingredient they couldn’t live without.

We want to know yours.

Drop it in the comments, and we’ll feature our favourites in next week’s stories.

You may not think about the story behind a tomato sauce when you select it from the shelf. But some carry a story that goes far beyond the jar.

The F.lli Contorno family have been making tomato sauces in Palermo, Sicily for generations. Their datterino and cherry tomato varieties are made with fruit picked at peak ripeness, a touch of extra virgin olive oil, fresh basil, and nothing unnecessary.

Palermo was named the Italian Capital of Culture in 2018, and this sauce is a direct tribute to that heritage. Sweet, vibrant, deeply Sicilian.

We carry both varieties at The Italian Pantry. They are genuinely unlike anything you’ll find on a supermarket shelf.

Italy is not one flavour. It has delicious produce busting from every region.

Each area has its own pantry, its own traditions, its own obsessions.

→ Puglia: orecchiette, burrata
→ Sicily: capers, almonds, preserved lemons
→ Umbria: lentils, black truffle, saffron
→ Piedmont: white truffle, hazelnuts, Barolo

And so much more.

At The Italian Pantry, we bring these regional stories together in one place so you can experience the flavours of Italy all in one place.

We love your questions.

‘How do I use truffle oil without overdoing it?’

‘What’s the difference between Grana Padano and Parmigiano?’

‘Is there a good gluten-free pasta that actually tastes like real pasta?’

This week we’re answering your most-asked questions. Drop yours in the comments below.

And as for the truffle oil…

A little goes a long way! Drizzle a few drops over pasta, risotto, pizza, fries, or eggs just before serving, be careful cooking with it, as heat can dull its flavour.

Before it reaches your kitchen, every drop of extra virgin olive oil begins with a tree.

In July, the olives are still small and green, months away from harvest. But this is when the magic starts.

At The Italian Pantry, we source cold-pressed, single-estate oils from producers who have farmed the same land for generations. No blending, no shortcuts.
