⛳️National Sporting Heritage Day⛳️

Let’s use this day to look back on our heritage and go right back to where it all began.

On 5th November 1907 a meeting was held at the Judge’s Room in the Aberdare Temperance Hall to consider forming a golf club in the Cynon Valley.

On 11th January 1908 the first General Meeting of the Aberdare Valley Golf Club was held. Suitable land for a golf course was found and a man named J. S. H. Morris was appointed from Burnham and Berrow Golf Club to take on the role of professional and greenkeeper. He designed a 9-hole course and laid it out on the land of Toncoch Farm in Cefnpennar.

Lord Aberdare had accepted the role of Club President, and this has carried on throughout the generations to the current day.

The original Clubhouse in the photo was built as a gift from Lord Aberdare at a cost of £250 in early 1908.

Committee meeting minutes from 14/4/1908 read "Clubhouse ordered from a company in Manchester." Further minutes from 19/5/1908 read "Clubhouse practically completed and will be opened by Major Morgan and the links to be declared open by Mr. de Winton on 23/5/1908."

The foundations of this Clubhouse still remain today and forms the passageway through to the function room, with the old office on the right and the ladies room on the left.

The first ever annual membership fee was a joining fee of £1 1s and a yearly fee of £2 2s.

On 23rd May 1908 the course and clubhouse was formally opened and over 100 members turned up to watch a match between J. S. H. Morris and J. G. Hutcheson, the professional at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. The match ended all square but Morris ended up winning by 49 shots to 51.

Since that day there have been so many changes, with the course extending to 12, then later 18 holes as we know it today. The club also changing it’s name in 1947 to Mountain Ash Golf Club after the formation of Aberdare Golf Club in 1921 and multiple extensions being added to the clubhouse in the 60s and 70s to make it what we see today.

Despite all that we are still proud of our heritage and it’s important that we never forget where it started and the work that was put in by Lord Aberdare and the founding members to give us a club and a course that we can all enjoy today.

⛳️⛳️⛳️Hole in 1⛳️⛳️⛳️

Congratulations to Dylan Cooper on a hole in 1 this afternoon on the par 3 14th hole.

A tricky hole guarded by bunkers either side but Dylan made easy work of it today and didn’t need the putter. Well done Dylan!

We’re heading into Autumn this year with some really solid greens after probably the most challenging summer we could have imagined.

A massive thank you to the staff and volunteers who have put in endless hours to make sure the course held its own through what has been a very difficult few months.

We’ve had plenty of challenges along the way, with electrical issues in the watering system and then our 200m deep borehole drying up! But we battled on, and the hard work, along with continued investment into the course, has carried us through.

Essential maintenance went well two weeks ago with a deep scarification of the greens, and they’ve recovered superbly.

We’ve got a great platform now and hopefully we can kick on from here.

If you’re looking for a club to join, look no further. We’re lucky to have great drainage and can offer a course that is playable in all four seasons.

We’re a friendly, welcoming community club with a course that we can be proud of.

If you’re thinking about joining, simply fill in our online form and we can process your application straight away: https://www.mountainashgc.com/membership
