We sadly announce that as it stands, this will be the last week of La Perla. After the huge amount invested with the attempt of giving Melton something special & different, we have simply not been given a fighting chance to recover after Covid lockdowns etc.
No support from the government & local authorities have pushed us to have no option but to simply give up. Ridiculous sky high Business Rates, unrealistic rents, rising costs, electricity, gas etc along with no VAT catch up relief/amnesty for hospitality are just a few of the factors. Many do not know that Restaurants cannot claim VAT on food but must charge for serving it !! adding to the struggles and consequently racking up disproportionate tax bills. Basically put, the more you work, the more you lose. (Operating legally)
Poor mismanagement of grants during lockdown by our local authority are also a key factor for example. Grants were given evenly to all businesses "irrelevant of their size, or them even remaining operational during lockdown! ". Some businesses still even received grants while they were actually on sale! A nice little COVID holiday bonus.
My battles with the council concluded with simply that they had to 'distribute fairly the same amount to all businesses irrespective of their situation'. Consequently our grants did not even cover half of our ongoing rent during our forced closure for over a year making our come back a huge struggle. Having the recent Β£35,000 Christmas tree hole across the road from us, is also an everyday reminder of mismanagement of funds. Luckily the Β£400k public toilets up the road were not in my field of vision.
Recently all we hear from our local MP is an obvious passion for Rutland and an obsession with our Cattle Market, inevitably leaving our town centre to crumble away. I'm guessing my emails to her are in her junkmail. Β£5.5m invested so far and soon to be Β£12m. Town centre? Β£0.00
Rant aside. I would like to thank everyone and express my humble gratitude to everyone that has supported us and given me the chance to try to give Melton Mowbray something different and special. It has been a wonderful experience in my life to be given the opportunity to share my passion for cooking with you all and make so many new friends during my journey.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the truly amazing staff that have been with me and supported me throughout this roller coaster ride who I have become very attached to.
Melton Mowbray, it has been an honour serving you.
Thank you
Sacha
P.s. Good luck to the surviving private businesses in Melton Mowbray that are the true heart of our historical town.
