Another Time, Another Place 🎥
We’ve written and created a beautiful song for the next album; inspired by a night in the Jolly Sailor Inn, West Looe, back in the late 1950’s. Hollywood star Lana Turner and a young Sean Connery were dazzling the locals, Lana in her fur coat and Sean keen to impress. He taught her how to play darts.

Here’s a peek at the lyrics:

Bright lipstick, a painted smile,
A Hollywood queen in Portbyhan,
If only for a while.
She was the star, a romance for the flicks,
A picture for the screen,
And old Looe watched in wonderment
A film star, from a La La Land dream.

[Chorus]
Oh, Lana Turner laughed that night
In the Jolly Sailor Inn,
Mr.Connery upon her arm,
A hot young man with a grin.
The Scot was new to cinema,
He taught her darts in that old Inn,
Where She blew smoke into his face—
‘Bullseye!, Mr.Connery. Let the night begin’

Rumour spread during filming, that Sean was having an affair with Lana. Connery was confronted on-set by gangster Johnny Stompanato, then-boyfriend of Lana Turner, who suspected the actor was having an affair with Turner. Stompanato pointed a gun at Connery and warned him to keep away from Turner. Connery responded by grabbing the gun out of Stompanato's hand and twisting his wrist, causing him to run off the set*.

Steamy Hollywood drama in old Portbyhan? It’s a wonderful story, so it’s a pleasure to write and sing the song. It’s beautifully put together by Keyln, Vanessa and produced by Bear. A dash of Bond, a tango tempo and a story of seduction.

The table featured in the photos can still be found in the old pub. Grab a drink, take a seat, and let your mind wander back to that night.

The song is part of our forthcoming album, Postcards from Looe. Out very soon! 💿

*very likely a studio set, we hope, and not in the Jolly!

Last night, we attended the Looe Business Awards, organised by Looe and Liskeard Radio and frequented by all the great businesses of Looe… and we were in for a pretty big surprise.

After a great introduction by Mike Allsopp the Awards began to flow.

It was a little surprising when we got to the Best Pub/Bar award and The Jolly Sailor was announced as the winner of this category… and we were up against some strong names!

But, as the penultimate category “Looe Local Favourite” was introduced, and the announcement came through the speakers, our minds did a little…
“I’msorrywhat? Can you repeat the answer please?
You said, Th…The… Jolly Sailor? Right?!”

So, today, we sit here, proud as punch, with one award for Best Pub/Bar and one for Looe Local Favourite.

How humbled are we?

These awards aren’t just a reflection of how hard we have worked to build our business up.

They aren’t just about the things we are involved in such as the May Fayre and our own Music festival (that started at the tail end of Looe Live so we could give something back to the local community).

It is about Zoë who works tirelessly to make Looe safe, and great, with things such as working with Local and Cornwall Council, Police and Licencing matters, UKPAC and chairing the town’s PubWatch.

We wouldn’t be where we are without our staff and friends, who are like an extension of our family - and, of course, our parents, two sons (and the two dogs). They have our backs, and we have theirs. Thank you to you all, you lovely people!

It’s also about our locals, visitors and guests who support us throughout the year - the ones who enter as strangers and leave as friends.

And without the votes from all of these amazing people, we wouldn’t be where we are this morning!

Between us all, we have made The Jolly Sailor Inn a genuine, Multi Award Winning Pub.

Thank you, every single one of you.
