Fox & Hounds Belgravia

Directions

Fox & Hounds Belgravia A proper Belgravia local since 1863 đŸș Cask ales, Guinness, pub quizzes and a warm welcome for dogs.

The Fox and Hounds is a cosy and inviting 19th century pub tucked away behind Sloane Square and the Kings Road. Built in 1860 as a working mans pub for the staff of the Grosvenor estate, the pub originally operated as ales only. It was in-fact the last London Pub to operate as such until in 1996, a spirit license was at long last acquired. You'll find plenty of fox themed memorabilia on the walls and three big hounds even live upstairs! The pub is also close to Chelsea Royal Hospital, so expect to see the traditional Chelsea pensioner propping up the bar and doing a crossword during the day! The Fox has the widest possible clientele and it is not at all odd to see the odd celebrity having a well deserved pint after a show at the Royal Court Theatre. Customers can enjoy fine cask ales, distinctive international lagers and a good selection of wines. The pub is dog friendly so feel free to bring your four legged family members along too!

Our resident girl Misha was joined by two rather stylish visitors from Safari Doods, including one sporting possibly the finest giraffe-inspired haircut we’ve ever seen!

October b**rs at the Fox đŸș🎃

Yes, yes, Oktoberfest may technically be over, but we’re keeping a little Bavarian spirit going with Hofmeister Helles , despite the name, Oktoberfest mostly happens in September these days. Why isn’t it Septepfest, I wonder? đŸ€”

Then there’s Ghost Ship, which feels rather appropriately timed for spooky season
and Rebel IPA, which we’re going to claim fits the theme because October clearly needs a bit of rebellion in it too.

Alongside those, we’ve got Young’s Original, Timothy Taylor’s Golden Best and Harvey’s Sussex Best on the bar.

And while we’re talking October - our pub quiz is on the last Sunday of the month! With fancy dress very much encouraged.

THE FOX FILES ‱ 3: STILL A FAMILY PUB

The best part of the Fox’s history? It’s still being written by the people who walk through the door.

Dee took over as landlady at the end of 2002. Today, she runs the pub with her son Michael. Nearly 24 years of familiar faces, new neighbours and stories shared across the bar.

Back in Victorian times, Ann Hadland and her son Thomas were part of the Fox’s story. More than a century later, there’s another mother and son keeping the welcome going. Different generations, the same little corner of Belgravia.

It’s the final day of Chelsea History Festival today. If you’re out exploring, pop over to 29 Passmore Street, just behind Sloane Square, and finish your afternoon at the Fox.

What’s your favourite Fox memory? We’d love to hear it.

THE FOX FILES ‱ ARCHIVE EXTRA: ANN HADLAND, 1888

Our Victorian landlady’s story reached the newspapers.

An online transcription of Lloyd’s Weekly Newspaper, dated 29 April 1888, describes an attack on Ann Hadland at the Fox on 16 March. A customer had drawn her attention to the taproom fire before assaulting her. The report records a conviction for unlawful wounding and a sentence of two months’ hard labour.

Ann’s story didn’t end there: later directories continued to list her as the Fox’s b**r retailer, including in 1902. Behind the old pub doors were real people and remarkable lives.

We’re sharing a little of that local history while Chelsea History Festival is on this weekend. Exploring the talks and walks? You’ll find us at 29 Passmore Street, Belgravia, just behind Sloane Square.

THE FOX FILES ‱ 2: BEFORE THE G&T

There was a time when you couldn’t order a gin at the Fox.

Long celebrated as London’s last ale house, the pub could sell b**r and w**e, but no spirits. Contemporary reporting records the change in August 1999. Quite a moment for a little corner pub!

There’s a showbusiness connection too. A 1999 London Drinker report recalls the Fox being run by comedian Dickie Henderson’s family in the 1940s. Later, Lionel Wells and his daughter Diane Harvey helped keep the b**rhouse tradition alive.

Different families, familiar doors. Here’s another photograph from our archive. Do you remember the Fox before spirits arrived?

Chelsea History Festival is on until Sunday. After the talks and walks, come and find a little local history at 29 Passmore Street, Belgravia, just behind Sloane Square.
