One of the biggest differences between rock and native oysters is the speed in which they grow. Rocks tend to filter twice as much water as a native oyster and this accelerates their growth. Natives need time and the right conditions to grow and thrive.

It’s worth pointing out that we are talking about our oyster farm on Mersea Island. We cultivate oysters in a unique area of the UK and as such, our oyster beds and the way we farm our oysters may be different to how others do it in other areas. We can only talk and educate based on our rich history and learn from mistakes that have been made in the past. On Mersea, both species can coexist.

Are rock oysters an invasive species? ABSOLUTELY NOT 🦪 before coming for us, we have been cultivating molluscs for over 300 years and have discovered a lot along the way. The industry has made mistakes and righted them. Most oyster farmers in the UK (and Europe) cultivate rock oysters as they are now indigenous to our shores.
