The Gaelic Athletic Association was founded in a billiard room in Hayes Hotel in Thurles in November 1884, by seven men, and it changed Irish identity more than most political movements did.

The games themselves were old. Hurling appears in the Brehon laws and in the Tain, and Cu Chulainn's hurley is part of his legend. What the GAA did was codify them, at a moment when Irish culture was under real pressure, and tie every club to a place. Not to a city, not to a company, not to a paying crowd. To a parish.

That decision is why the thing still works. You do not choose your club. You are born into it, the way you are born into a townland. A man can leave for forty years and come home and still be from that parish, and the club is where that is settled.

And it remains amateur. The men and women who play in front of eighty thousand people at Croke Park go to work on Monday morning. In an age when almost everything else about sport has been sold, Ireland has quietly held on to a games system that belongs to the people who play it.
