The Beacon Kitchen Table
Our volunteers have been working hard behind the scenes to help people in the community access free food.
Over the last 9 months this project has kept £12,500 of stock from hitting land fill.
The project has now grown, allowing us to open it to the whole community. By redistributing donations from Daliburgh Co-op, we are helping to reduce food waste across South Uist.
What Is the Beacon Kitchen Table?
The Kitchen Table is a community space where surplus food is safely stored—fresh or frozen—and made available to everyone, completely free of charge.
Our aim is to reduce food waste. We also provide bins for suitable surplus food that can be used as hen feed, so please check whether there is anything available for your hens.
How It Works
Our volunteers collect on date food donated by the Co-op and stock the fridges and freezers.
They will check condition of fresh food and do freezer rotations.
Please help yourself to anything you can use. Have a look through the freezers and check the fridge to see what is available.
Is This a Food Bank?
No. The Kitchen Table is a community food-sharing project that helps prevent perfectly good food from going to landfill, reducing waste and supporting the environment.
We welcome surplus food from local businesses, as well as home-grown vegetables and eggs. It is a simple way for the community to share what it has and make good use of surplus produce.
What Food Is Available?
Available food varies according to the donations we receive from the Co-op. Also, the time of year effects the amount of surplus food.
On mornings when new supplies arrive, we will post an update on The Beacon Kitchen Table page.
Who Funds the Project?
The Beacon funds the project, while volunteers cover their own fuel costs.
