Wrexham's hospitality scene is something to be proud of. From our pubs and cafรฉs to our restaurants and hotels, these are the places that welcome visitors, give our streets life, and create jobs right across the county borough.
But right now, that scene is under real pressure. Rising costs are forcing venues to change what they offer, cut back, or close their doors altogether, and every one we lose chips away at what makes Wrexham a place people want to visit and spend time in.
Here's something worth knowing: in the UK we pay 20% VAT on hospitality, one of the highest rates in Europe. In France, Spain and Italy it's 10%. In Germany, just 7%. Our local businesses are competing on a deeply uneven playing field.
That's why This Is Wrecsam is backing the VATsTheProblem campaign, led by chef and publican Tom Kerridge, calling for a fair 10% VAT rate for hospitality. A lower rate would protect local jobs, support the businesses at the heart of our visitor economy, and help secure a stronger future for the places we all love.
