It’s taken a while but there’s been lots to do. The floor’s being laid today, so a new prep area can be installed within the next week. Then it’s painting, getting all the gear back into place, a bit of rehearsal, a lot of food making, and off away with what we like doing the best. Thanks so much for your patience.

Bailgate Deli closed on Xmas Eve, at least in its latest iteration (more in a second). From all of us, including the many who have worked here over the years, a huge thank you to you, our wonderful customers. A cafe is the sum of its team and its users. We’ve hugely enjoyed your company! The good (unexpected) news is that it will reopen in mid/late January under new, experienced management. It will remain plant based and keep the same team, watch this space!

Bailgate Deli will close at the end of December 2025. The last day will be Christmas Eve. We’re very sorry that this is the case but there are good reasons.

The deli has been the sum of a great team and a large, wonderful customer base, including many we’re delighted to call friends. It’s been a rare plant based oasis in the city, with food that’s got better and better—the product of inventive and caring minds. We’ve also greatly enjoyed the constant dialogue with and between customers and staff, and customers with customers. It’s been a place of humour and a relaxing, informal vibe, even when it’s been at its crazy busiest.

We’ve come to a point where family matters have become more and more important and that the economic environment has become more and more difficult. It’s the former that is most critical for us.

By closing the deli we hope to attract a worthy successor to a site with great footfall, rare as hen’s teeth pavement seating on a soon to be pedestrianised street, and a destination known by very many people. If we can keep it plant based or largely so, we’ll be delighted.

We’ve made masses of wellingtons and galettes over the years, to satisfy the needs of folk that don’t eat meat or just plain want an alternative to the usual. Buy frozen, defrost on Christmas Eve and b**g in the oven on Christmas Day, it’s as simple as that.
Final decisions on the list over the next few days but we know that this year, for the first time, Katsu curry will be included as well as the staple Christmassy, Garlic Mushroom and Middle Eastern. Watch this space!
