🎃 A little Halloween reading at Shadwell Library! 📚

Our volunteer librarian has been busy putting together another of her book displays — this time with Halloween in mind and a special focus on children’s books.

Whether you’re looking for a spooky story, an autumn read or something new to share with the children, why not pop in and see what’s on the shelves?

📚 Borrowing is free, and everyone is welcome.

📚 The History of Leeds Grammar School – Tuesday 6 October

Our next talk at Shadwell Library is on Tuesday 6 October at 7.30pm, when Neill Hargreaves will be talking about the history of Leeds Grammar School.

Neill lives locally and has a particular interest in local history. He has also recently researched and produced a history of our own Red Lion pub, so we’re looking forward to hearing what he has to tell us about the long and fascinating history of Leeds Grammar School.

The talk will take place in the Library and booking is essential.

£5, including refreshments

☕️ Hardback Café is open throughout October! 📚

Come and enjoy a cuppa, some homemade cake and a bit of time to browse the books and jigsaws at Shadwell Library. Whether you’re meeting a friend, having a catch-up or just fancy a little treat, we’d love to see you. 😊

Our October opening dates are on the poster below — and there’s something a little spooky in store for the final café sessions of the month, with some Halloween-themed treats making an appearance! 👻🎃

As always, everything we raise through the café helps support Shadwell Library. 💛

📚 What’s On at Shadwell Library this week

A normal week in the Library this week, so we thought we’d take the opportunity to remind you that our lovely community space is also available to hire.

Looking for somewhere local for a meeting, small gathering, club or private event? Our Grade II listed former Methodist chapel makes a cosy and characterful venue, with tables, chairs, kitchen and toilet facilities, and space for up to 35 people.

If you’d like to find out more, please contact Linda on 07979 798030.

And if you’re simply looking for a book, a jigsaw or a friendly place to spend a little time, you’ll find us here too. 💙📚

📚💙 We love this reminder that it’s never too early to start sharing books with little ones.

Our children’s corner at Shadwell Library is a lovely little space to choose a book, settle down together and enjoy a story. We also have toys and jigsaws for our younger visitors to enjoy while they’re here.

And, of course, our books are free to borrow — so pop in, have a look and discover something to share together. 📖😊

👮‍♀️ Meet your local neighbourhood West Yorkshire Police - Leeds North East police officers this Thursday.

Did you know that West Yorkshire Police Leeds North East hold a regular Police Contact Point at Shadwell Library every six weeks?

📅 Thursday 17 September
🕓 4.00pm – 5.00pm
📍 Shadwell Library

There’s no need to make an appointment – just call in for an informal chat.

Whether you have a concern about something you’ve noticed in the area, would like some crime prevention advice, have a question about local policing, or simply want to meet your neighbourhood officers, you’ll be made very welcome.

We’re fortunate that Shadwell is a safe village, but that’s something we all have a part in maintaining. The Police Contact Point is a great opportunity to keep in touch with your local officers and raise any issues, however small they may seem.

We look forward to welcoming you to the library on Thursday.

📚 A busy week at Shadwell Library!

There’s plenty happening this week, from Crafters and the Hardback Café to local groups, meetings and our regular Police Contact Point on Thursday from 4–5pm. 👮

Thursday evening also sees our Heritage Open Day talk, ‘A Brief History of Surgery’ with Jake Timothy. We’re delighted that this is now fully booked – thank you to everyone who has reserved a place.

And, of course, you don’t need an event as a reason to call in. The Library is open at the usual times for books, jigsaws, a browse and a chat. 📚🧩

☕ Hardback Café: Tuesday 11am–1.30pm & Friday 11.30am–2pm.

Hope to see you sometime during the week! 😊

☕ There’s more to volunteering at the Hardback Café than making tea and serving lunch… 🥰

Some of our café volunteers recently got together to celebrate Diane’s big birthday – a lovely reminder that volunteering can be a great way to meet people, make friends and become part of a team.

We’d love to welcome a few more people to ours.

There’s no need to commit every week – our volunteers simply add their availability to the rota, and there are lots of different ways to help.

We’re also particularly looking for someone who could spare around half an hour from 2pm on occasional Fridays to help stack and put away the tables and chairs. You wouldn’t need to work a café shift – just a little muscle at closing time would be enormously appreciated! 💪

If you fancy finding out more, send us a message or pop into one of the Hardback Cafés for a chat. You might come along to help and find you enjoy the social side too. ☕🍰
