21 Co. and Sunshine and Smiles are featured in an article in The Gryphon, a student-run newspaper at the University of Leeds. 📰 It was written by a journalism student who visited 21 Co. and spoke with our team a few months ago. ✍️

The piece explores the growing pressures facing the charity sector across the UK, from rising costs and increasing demand to ongoing challenges around funding. It highlights the vital role charities continue to play in supporting communities, even in a really difficult and changing environment.

It includes quotes from our Service Manager Ailith, and Francis, one of our café team members, sharing both the realities of day-to-day charity work and Francis’ experience of working in the café. ☕

🗣️We had some lovely feedback from a customer the other day, when we asked what she likes about 21 Co.

She told us she visits both of our cafés and loves the food, great coffee and the whole setup. 🍰☕ She said we offer something different from the big chains — and we’d like to think that’s true!.

21 Co. is run for and by people with Down syndrome, offering training and paid work experience with the aim of creating job opportunities. Our team is growing in confidence, developing new skills and gaining greater independence.

What might seem like just a cup of coffee can make a big difference to our team and the opportunities we’re able to create. 💙

We're excited to say that we have a new maker at 21 Co. 🖌️

A lovely lady called Marilyn has painted these gorgeous canvases and you can see a few that we have hanging in the café at the moment. All proceeds from sales will go directly to Sunshine and Smiles and back into 21 Co. which is very generous! 🤗

Marilyn is also more than happy to take commissions - so if you have a favourite animal or even a beloved pet that you would like painting, please contact us or ask a member of our café team. 💛 They would also make a lovely gift for an animal lover! 🐈‍⬛🐎🦊

Francis is proud to share why he loves working at 21 Co. 💛

His favourite part of the job is making coffees, serving customers, and being part of a supportive team from the moment he starts his shift. He's always keen to get stuck in - taking orders, greeting customers, and making coffees. ☕

We're recruiting volunteers to join our friendly teams across both of our amazing cafés 💛

Our volunteers support adults with Down syndrome in their café roles, helping build confidence, independence, and valuable life skills. It’s a hands-on, rewarding role where no two days are the same.

You might be:
☕ Supporting with café tasks and customer service
🥪 Helping with food prep & barista coffee making
🧼 Keeping the space welcoming and running smoothly
🤝 Encouraging our team members to grow in confidence and independence

👀We’re looking for positive, supportive people who enjoy being part of a team and making a difference in their community. Training will be provided.

💙We are especially in need of someone who could support at on Wednesdays from 10:00am – 3:00pm, so if you'd like a meaningful way to spend your Wednesdays - we’d love to hear from you! 💙
