“In my culture, communication can be more direct than in British culture. I've learned the importance of using gentle and respectful language to help avoid misunderstandings.”

— Ismail, Real Hope graduate

🌍 To date, Real Hope has trained up baristas from 25 different nations!

As part of helping our trainees become work-ready, we support them in understanding the norms and expectations of UK workplace culture — and how these may differ from their previous experiences.

Understanding cultural differences can make a real difference to communication, confidence and building positive relationships at work. 🤝
Ismail is already putting these skills into practice in his new role at Leeds' amazing new brunch cafe, Bruncho!

We couldn't be prouder of Real Hope graduate Yenny, who's successfully completed a rigorous interview process with Luminate Education Group to work in the cafeteria at Leeds City College's Park Lane campus.

Not only that, she continues to work in her roles at Leeds Playhouse and Leeds Royal Armouries at weekends and in school holidays!

She is an incredible example of what Real Hope graduates can achieve with determination, perseverance, and the right support. Well done Yenny!

As well as providing barista work placements, Real Hope offers to support our trainees into hospitality-related voluntary roles in order to build their confidence, connections and CVs - and enable them to give something back to their local communities.

Here's what Holbeck Together have to say about welcoming a Real Hope trainee onto their team of volunteers:
'Bashar is always friendly, willing to help and happy to get involved with tasks set by our chef. We're so pleased he can volunteer with us!'

It's been brilliant to be able to partner with Holbeck Together in this way. If you run a community cafe or other hospitality project and you'd like to find out more about how we can connect you with great volunteers, we'd love to hear from you.

Such a pleasure to cater for Dave & Rachel on their wedding day. 🤍

Serving 200 guests without a kitchen was no problem for our Real Hope graduates, led by Arash! Guests commented on how delicious and beautifully presented the food was.

Congratulations to Dave & Rachel, and Real Hope loved being a part of your special day! 🥂✨ https://realhope.uk/

Real Hope helps asylum seekers and refugees avoid the pitfalls of the black market by offering employment support.

However, the government’s recent announcements will, according to Dr Dora-Olivia Vicol, CEO of Work Rights Centre, increase modern slavery in the UK.

She says: “Without the basic safety net of housing and financial support, asylum seekers – who are not allowed to work for the most part – will see no way to survive but by taking up dangerous work on the black market, where they risk exploitation and trafficking. This is not a deterrent to dangerous crossings, it is a new low in the history of hostility to migrants that actively creates the conditions for modern slavery."

The UK had far fewer asylum seekers in the last year than Germany, France or Spain.

Just 10% of the total claims in the EU+ UK. Remember this the next time a politician says the UK is the 'destination of choice in Europe'.

Refugees would benefit the UK economy if more projects like Real Hope existed.

A new report by the LSE has identified how every refugee accepted into the UK would contribute over £260,000 to the UK economy if 4 simple policy changes were made.
- Asylum claims to be processed within six months
- Legal assistance at all stages of the application process
- English language support from day of arrival
- Employment support from day of arrival.

Real Hope's employment support is already helping refugees into work. Hope not hate! https://www.pcs.org.uk/news-events/news/newly-commissioned-report-suggests-refugees-could-bring-over-ps260k-each-uk
