Today I had the honour of catering for the Coventry Hiroshima Remembrance Service.

Coventry and Hiroshima have been twin cities since 1959, united by a shared commitment to peace.

Today marks the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, a day of remembrance and reflection.

I have a close friend from Hiroshima, and over the years I’ve heard stories passed down through her family about the bombing and its lasting impact. In Hiroshima, children grow up learning not only about what happened, but why peace must never be taken for granted.

It was a privilege to prepare Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki for today’s gathering, sharing a small part of Hiroshima’s culture on a day that carries such deep meaning.

May we continue to choose understanding over hatred, compassion over conflict. May everyone, everywhere be able to live in peace.

Happy Doyō no Ushi no Hi! 🤤✨
In Japan, today is the day everyone eats delicious Unagi (eel). But did you know this tradition started as a clever rescue mission?
💡 The Story: Back in the Edo period, a local eel shop owner was in desperate trouble because nobody wanted to eat rich, heavy eel during the sweltering summer heat.
Seeing his friend struggle, the brilliant scholar Hiraga Gennai stepped in to help save the business. He created a cheeky promotional sign: "Today is the Day of the Ox (Ushi) — Eat 'U' foods to stay healthy!" The campaign went viral, saved the shop, and created a 250-year-old tradition! 📈🎉
🍱 The Benefit: Gennai was actually spot on. Unagi is a true summer superfood packed with Vitamin A, B1, and Omega-3s to beat Natsubate (summer heat fatigue) and restore your stamina. 💪✨

🎋 What are you wishing for this Tanabata?

Today is Tanabata (the Star Festival), a traditional Japanese celebration held on the 7th of July.
According to the Chinese legend, two lovers, Orihime(Vega) and Hikoboshi(Altair), are separated by the Milky Way and are allowed to meet just once a year—if the skies are clear.

In Japan, people write their wishes on colourful strips of paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo branches, hoping their dreams will come true.

✨ As for my wish…
Rather than wishing for something new, I hope to keep a heart full of gratitude.
To appreciate every person I meet, every experience, and every blessing in my life.

I hope Orihime and Hikoboshi found each other tonight, and that your wishes find their way to the stars too. 🌌✨
