The Gregson Centre

The Gregson Centre Lancaster's only community led arts & community centre and cafe bar. Open 7 days a week from 10am - 11pm (sometimes a little later) We make that happen.

Community Led - Community Owned
In a world that seems increasingly disconnected, where more of us feel isolated and where community can seem in decline, the Gregson is a beacon of hope. Our mission is for people to be in the driving seat of their community events and cultural experiences. We believe it is critical that our community has a place to come together. Our spaces play a crucial role in o

ur city’s cultural ecology. It is everyone’s right to create and take part in community life and culture, in all its diversity. We are a meeting place of people, ages and cultures. We’re a place to create, to think, to drink and to dance. We’re not dedicated to one artform, and believe our community knows what is relevant to them. Our spaces are currently home to 50 regular groups and a range of cultural and community events and celebrations

At the heart of the Gregson is Lancaster’s only community run bar and cafe. It’s a far cry from what you’d find in most cultural buildings. It is honest and warm hearted and a social hub in its own right. The Gregson was built in 1889, with donations in memory of former city Mayor, Henry Gregson. For the last forty years our charity, the Gregson Community Association, has been the building’s custodians. We’ve been through a difficult time since lockdown, but local people once again saved the Gregson from closure and our charity now manages the building directly. All the income we make is invested back into the centre and the community. Beyond our walls, our charity supports three sub-groups who work to make community life better. Friends of Miss Whalley’s Field maintain the ‘Gregson’s Garden’, a once disused site which has been transformed into a wonderful urban green space. The Gregson Festival Group deliver community events including an annual firework display and bonfire. And The Highfield Recreation Ground, where local people restored a mainly derelict sports facility to provide an essential outdoor community space. The Gregson exists because of our community’s tenacity and strength. We have ambitious volunteers, members, trustees, and staff, but face challenges within the current climate, and after covid, we’re fragile. With your support, we can make the Gregson work. This weekend!

Poster for Trembling Images Film Club's Pride Month screening in The Gregson Centre.

This year we are screening a selection of experimental American q***r films made between the 1940s-1990s which should appeal to fans of docudramas, video art and the avant garde.

The screening is taking place at The Secret Cinema The Gregson Centre at 7pm on Saturday 27th June. We continue to operate on a pay as you feel basis.

Given some of the film’s contents regarding nudity and substance abuse this screening is 18+.

You can feel the World Cup buzz in the air... 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

There are so many fabulous pubs and venues in Lancaster screening the games - but if you wanted a slightly quieter, more low-key vibe, we thought we'd let you know that our 25-seater Secret Cinema is currently free for England's last group game against Panama

Only £17.50 per hour to book, and tucked away from the rest of the buidling. Perfect for small group of family and friends - with guaranteed seats, cheap drinks and your own space to celebrate. Email [email protected] to find out more

Now then, should we bring the World Cup fever to the Gregson?

We're thinking of hosting screenings of England's knockout games (however many there may be 👀). We know that the good people of Lancaster are absolutely spoilt for choice with places to enjoy the games, so we want to know if there would be any interest in watching them here!

We hope you’re all enjoying the sun and staying safe and hydrated ☀️

At the Gregson we’re doing everything we can to mitigate the heat and keep the centre as cool as possible. Thanks to the hard work of a couple of trusty fans and plenty of open doors, we’ve even managed to get the Cafe Bar feeling quite breezy ❄️

Please remember to drink plenty of water (available ice cold at the bar), and if you need an extra pick-me-up take advantage of one our Iced Coffees (vanilla or caramel syrup available too 🧊🧊)

Stay cool, everyone 😎👌

This month’s Cafe Bar exhibition is from John Robertson, entitled “Traces: uncertain, forgotten or gone” 🖼 📸

John began photographing at 15. Through a process of layering surfaces and textures he now explores the uncertainty of the relationship between buildings and nature.

To celebrate his work, we’re holding an Art Social – an informal gathering to have a chance to chat to the artist over a drink and meet other local creatives.

No need to book – just rock up, grab a drink and have a chat over some live jazz music.
