"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

Yesterday evening, after meeting with Bradley from Ipswich Outreach on Tuesday to donate some hygiene products, I joined the Ipswich Outreach bus in Ipswich town centre to see first-hand the incredible work their team does supporting people experiencing homelessness.

The outreach bus provided chips, tea, coffee, food hygiene products and a friendly face to those who need it most.

I spent an hour getting stuck in alongside the dedicated volunteers, helping serve and speak with members of our community while gaining a better understanding of the challenges many people face.It was inspiring to witness the compassion, commitment and hard work of everyone involved. A huge thank you to the volunteer team for welcoming me and for everything they do to support vulnerable people across the Ipswich community 💚.

Grassroots and local community charity Memory Lane Cafe was so thrilled to receive a grant from the Asda Foundation.Tina, who helps run the group, said the money would help with the weekly costs of entertainment, refreshments, the group has over 50 people come through the door on a Tuesday to the dementia group, and wouldn’t run without the help of the Asda Foundation grants and my support.- Debbie, Asda community champion

Today I had the pleasure of meeting Bradley from the charity Ipswich Outreach Bus, who came into store to discuss how we can support their incredible grassroots work within the local community.

The charity provides direct support to homeless, vulnerable, and marginalised people on the streets of Ipswich, and we’re proud to explore ways we can help through donations and community.

Supporting local initiatives that make a real difference is something we’re passionate about, and we look forward to working together to help those who need it most. 💚

I had the privilege of visiting HOUR Community Charity in Framlingham to present a cheque for £20,000 from our Asda Foundaion Local Community Spaces Fund.

Nick and his incredible team of volunteers work tirelessly to support their elderly rural community.

They provide vital transport services, helping elderly residents get to and from hospital and doctors’ appointments, as well as creating a welcoming community hub where older people can enjoy hot drinks, meals, friendship, and conversation in a warm and safe environment.

The money will help maintain the building and its surroundings, and to open up the outside area to enjoy, For many, this space is much more than a charity and café—it’s a place to stay connected, find support, and keep up with what’s happening in the local community.

Grassroots charities like HOUR community make a real difference every day, and their dedication to supporting older generations is truly inspiring. I was proud to deliver this cheque today and see firsthand the positive impact they have on so many lives 💚

Meet Charley, our amazing colleague, who stepped in after seeing a customer in distress.

She spoke to the customer and found out that she had just had a bereavement in the family and was understandably upset. Being the kind hearted colleague that she is, Charley got her flowers and presented them to her with a big hug.

It’s acts of kindness like this that truly make our colleagues the best colleagues.

We want to say a huge thank you to our colleague Carol for her incredible kindness and generosity.

After speaking with Cherie from Fresh Hope Food Bank, which runs from Murryside Community Centre Ipswich, and hearing about how the food bank was established and the families it supports, Carol was moved to help. Out of the kindness of her heart, she purchased and donated an air fryer for a family in need through the food bank.

Acts of kindness like this make a real difference to local families and show the true spirit of our community. Thank you, Carol, for your thoughtful support.

Feeling grateful to have been invited not only to donate a raffle prize, but also to join the celebrations for Activlives’ 20th Birthday Party.

For 20 years, Activlives has been doing incredible work within our community, supporting people of all ages and abilities and creating opportunities that make a real difference to so many lives.

The turnout was fantastic, with so many people coming together to celebrate this remarkable milestone. It was wonderful to pop along, see the celebrations in full swing, and witness the positive impact this charity continues to have on our community.
