Specials and Sunday Roasts Delightfully unpretentious with local ales, simple, honest food and no modern intrusions. Popular with a wide mix of customers; cyclists, walkers with their dogs and families, this is an unspoilt local tucked away in the woods. Tastefully restored a

nd reopened in November 2022, the cosy and unchanging rooms are simply furnished around log fires. Famous for its local ales - Nethergate Viper VIPA and Mighty Oak Jake the Snake (both brewed for the pub) and Oscar Wilde, and a couple of quickly changing guests from brewers such as Crouch Vale and Mr Grundys on handpump and Westons Scrumpy and Perry. Live bands play during the very popular beer festivals, held at late May and August Bank Holiday Weekends and Morris Men sometimes dance outside. Now open everyday day for homemade food, a wide choice is shown on the chalk boards. At lunch time you can choose from sandwiches, lite bites, mains and desserts. In the evening you can enjoy tasty food from the main menu or lite bites, depending on your appetite. A special menu, including roasts is available on a Sunday. The majority of the food is locally sourced. Food served : Monday - Friday 12- 3pm & 6- 9pm

Tables on the lawn overlook a beautifully tended cottage garden - a dazzling mass of colour in summer, further enhanced at the front by overflowing hanging baskets and window boxes.

🎉 We're Finalists! 🎉

Thanks to all of your incredible support, we are absolutely thrilled to announce that The Viper has made it through to the Essex Life Food & Drink Awards 2026 Finals! 🏆

Voting closed on 21st July, and we only received the fantastic news yesterday!

We're honoured to have been voted finalists in not one, but two categories:

🍺 Bar of the Year
🌿 Best Use of Local Produce

The winners will be announced in September, so we'll be keeping everything crossed! 🤞

This August Bank Holiday weekend starts a little earlier at The Viper.

Mr White brings 'Public House Classics' to our beautiful garden – a carefully curated mix of laid-back tunes, feel-good favourites, soulful grooves and timeless classics, all chosen to complement a summer evening in the pub.

Think cold pints, crisp rosé, great company, and music that lets the conversation flow.
