Asda customer Joanna's visits to our South Ruislip store are going to be a bit different throughout October โ€“ she'll be seeing pictures of herself in the store as part of our Tickled Pink 30th anniversary celebrations!

Mother-of-three Joanna is sharing her experience of stage 3 breast cancer, which she discovered after going to see her GP to check out a subtle texture change in her breast, to raise awareness of the importance of regularly checking yourself for anything unusual.

She's very grateful for Asda's Tickled Pink campaign and everyone who's been involved in fundraising over 30 years: "I'd like to say a huge thank you to Asda Tickled Pink because its financial input makes a real difference so that Breast Cancer Now can have things in place to support everybody. Whether they're someone going through a cancer treatment, thinking they might have cancer, or if they're a family member of someone with cancer."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from our Thornaby store are all using their own experiences to spread awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer โ€“ and in the process have raised tens of thousands of pounds for our Tickled Pink campaign as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The trio have all had breast cancer and are well known in the store and the local community for dressing up in pink wigs and tutus and holding fundraising events for the campaign's charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! which always go down well with customers and colleagues.

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. Awareness is the big thing for for me and checking yourself is so important. Thatโ€™s what Tickled Pink does; it gets the message out there. Cancer is just a big scary word, but we must try to not look at the doom and gloom of it all. There are lots of positives. Medical research has improved leaps and bounds to what it was years ago. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about."

Pauline has recently retired, although she's already returned to the store to continue her fundraising. She's been instrumental in establishing a second-hand book stall at the front of the store for customers and colleagues which brings in about ยฃ2,000 to ยฃ3,000 a year for Tickled Pink. She said: We are the faces of Tickled Pink here and we are always here for anyone who needs to talk. In years gone by breast cancer wasn't talked about, but thankfully it is now. Tickled Pink has made breast cancer an everyday word; it's nothing to shy away from."

Julie has had breast cancer twice and says Tickled Pink's message of raising awareness of the importance of regularly checking yourself is vital. She said: "Early detection is so, so important, and I feel so lucky. This year I've been to the celebrations of my son, Martin, who has turned 40, and my oldest grand-daughter Ellie who turned 21 and graduated from university too. I've a little grand-daughter, Maisie, who's just turned six who I may not have even met, so I'm really thankful."

Look out for wonderful volunteers like Avter who'll be in our stores this weekend raising awareness and money for our Tickled Pink campaign, which supports charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!.

Avter's a regular customer at our Gillingham Pier store and has shared her experience of breast cancer as part of Tickled Pink's 30th anniversary celebrations. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer as a young mother at the age of 22 and she found the whole experience both lonely and terrifying and felt very isolated. So when in 2024, at the age of 56, she was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer she was determined things would be different. Rather than bottling up her experiences and trying to hide the fact she has breast cancer, Avter is sharing her story to help others like her feel less alone. She has attended Moving Forward, a course funded by Tickled Pink, designed to enable women like Avter to meet regularly, share their experiences and help each other.

She said: "The first time I had cancer there was nothing, no support, but this time I felt Iโ€™ve had a lot of support and not just from family and friends. I will talk to people about it because I think itโ€™s important and there are resources are out there that werenโ€™t there before. Moving Forward was brilliant. They hold sessions, face-to-face, and they have volunteers that come in and host the groups. And through there I met three other ladies whoโ€™ve been through breast cancer and we keep in contact through our WhatsApp group and we meet every three months and we support each other. Itโ€™s been lovely to be able to talk about it.

"Itโ€™s lovely to go on the Breast Cancer Now website to look at all the resources. Iโ€™m on it all the time! Iโ€™m on Exemestane, which is an estrogen blocker, and initially I was on Letrozole. And itโ€™s just nice to think, 'Am I alone going through these symptoms?' but you see other peopleโ€™s stories on there and the forums on there are fab. I like hearing of peopleโ€™s success stories."
