SOBER OCTOBER FROM ANOTHER ANGLE.

While Sober October has become a lifestyle challenge and fundraiser for charity, along with dry January, it has become a problem for an already struggling hospitality industry.

Right now, pubs and bars are closing at a phenomenal rate in the UK.

Last year dry January caused an estimated 18% decrease in sales across the board in the hospitality industry. Sober October cost pubs and clubs across the country and estimated Β£800 million I lost revenue.

While we agree that charity is important, it shouldn't be at the cost of a hard working and long standing British industry.

HERE'S A BETTER IDEA......

Get your mates together, go down to your local, speak to your landlord or landlady and organise a charity event in the pub.

Darts marathon. Pool marathon. A sponsored sit in a bathtub of beans. Anything that doesn't include stopping visiting them.

You would make more money for charity, have a really good time and you would be supporting your local!

This October.

THE BEST ACT OF VANDALISM WE'VE EVER HAD!

We had a few days away last week and arrived back on Sunday morning.

Outside the front of the pub we have a bench. It used to be a tatty old thing held together by the rust on the nails.

Every week this bench would host Lester and his wife Chris.

Lester is a regular and his wife used to join him whenever she could. He'd have a pint of fosters and she would have a Newcastle Brown and they would sit and chat for hours.

Unfortunately about two years ago Chris was diagnosed with cancer. It had spread to many parts of her body and became manageable rather than curable.

Through all her treatments, all her pain and suffering, she still turned up with Lester at least once a week. Sometimes it would be a quick visit on the way home from Christie's Hospital. The Newcastle Browns turned into Lime and Sodas but the same lady sat in the same place on the same bench.

The visits stopped a couple of months ago and sadly she passed at home, in her own bed with Lester close by recently.

Between us and our regulars we had this bench fully restored as a memorial bench.

The plaque is for "Chris and Lester's Happy Place"

WHEN WE RETURNED HOME WE FOUND OUT THE BENCH HAD BEEN VANDALISED!

The words "NO FATE" had been engraved into the wood of one of the planks.

We were mortified. To the point where we spent this morning going through hours of CCTV footage trying to find the culprits.

We noticed Lester had sat on the bench outside so we went out and spoke to him. We asked him when he noticed it had been vandalised as he sits there more often than anyone.

He looked up at us and his face went a little red.

His only words.......

"It Was Me. I'm sorry"

It turns out Chris and Lester had a mutual love of the movie The Terminator. The words are a reference to that film. At one point Lester even had his wife's number saved in his phone as Sarah Connor.

Cannot tell you how we felt.

It has become the story in the pub this week.

If you're ever sat at this bench for whatever reason you are more than welcome to rest your legs here. Just give a nod to Chris.

She'll be back ❀️

Going to address a question that's been asked so much this week.

Why do we not have Sky and show football.

Tell you why.........

As a private landlord of this pub with our bowling green and b**r gardens and SKY still using an outdated property rateable value to judge costs.......

To have SKY and TNT in this pub costs over Β£1,700 a month.

That comes out of our pockets.

You know who makes the least money form pubs when you take away brewery costs, overpriced b**r and, utilities and TV?

The landlords.

When you look at chain venues and breweries that have deals with SKY it's different.

We have no deals. No loyalty discounts. Nothing.

We simply cannot afford the cost of screening live football in today's environment.

Simple.

Sorry.
