Drover Cycles is an independent bike shop in Hay on Wye. We sell bikes and related accessories, repair and build bikes and offer bike hire. We also trade as Drover Holidays, as a tour operator offering walking and cycling holidays all over Wales.
The Café at Drover Cycles is a more recent venture. We opened in 2016 to offer drinks and a variety of hot and cold snacks to our customers. The cafe is particularly aimed at visiting cyclists and walkers but caters for the broader tourist and local market as well. The cafe is the place where we welcome and host industry reps, journalists and other guests. Finally, we also act as a “feedstation” or start/end point for long-distance events and cycle challenges, which may be organised in-house or by a third party. Our cafe is well-equipped but modest and offers outdoor seating only. We serve mainly coffee and cakes and a limited range of savoury/hot food options. Quality is very important to us.
We are offering an exciting opportunity to join our hard-working team. For the first time, we are offering a role which focuses on the café. We want you to help us develop the café to realise its potential, making it a more significant part of the business in terms of profile and revenue. You will ideally have previous catering experience and will need to be confident, outgoing and unflappable and have a good dose of common sense. You’ll have a passion for good food and, preferably, for cycling! The job is hands-on and practical but also varied - preparing food, looking after customers, buying supplies and promoting our offer are all part of the role. No two days will be the same so a flexible approach is essential.
Your day-to-day duties will include:
Opening and closing the café including carrying out daily checks;
Greeting and serving customers;
Welcoming visitors and notifying colleagues of their arrival;
Preparing and cooking food and drink for customers and staff;
Keeping accurate records of cleaning, deliveries etc;
Stock ordering, labelling and rotation;
Other general kitchen duties such as washing up, mopping floors etc;
Supervising/managing the cafe assistant and other casual staff;
An important element of the role is to help us grow the business generated by the cafe by:
Identifying new customers and opportunities, e.g. by carrying out market research;
Promoting the café through local press, promotions and social media;
Creating new menus and dishes;
Sourcing new products and working with local suppliers;
Working with colleagues to ensure effective cross-promotion of cafe/shop/hire products and services.
In addition you may be asked to carry out a number of other routine tasks, for which full training will be given. These tasks are likely to make up a more significant part of the role during periods when the cafe is quieter and/or until demand increases:
Greeting shop, bike hire and holiday customers and helping them with routine enquiries;
Answering the telephone and taking messages / directing calls to other team members as necessary;
Merchandising and pricing up products in the shop;
Data entry, filing, preparing mail-outs and other routine paperwork.
Requirements for the role
Previous retail and kitchen/catering experience preferred but not essential. On the job training will be provided including food hygiene and barista skills.
