The Robert Burre is a beautiful pub located on Burrs Road, Great Clacton, which is just over 2 miles from the town center. It has a good-sized car park which means parking is never an issue. The pub is run and staffed mostly by their very large family and this gives the Burre an atmosphere that you just can't find in a chain pub/restaurant. The pub is steeped in history and is reported to be haunted, and according to the old landlord "the little girl, ghost" saved his life (if you're lucky the old landlord may tell you the story himself as he is still a regular and so is the previous Landlady. The Robert Burre was built in the late 1300s and as the age suggests makes it postcard perfect. The internal decoration is very old school with beautiful exposed oak beams with traditional low ceilings and open fireplaces making it home from home on a cold frosty winter's evening. When the sun's shining you can enjoy the beauty of this listed building while you enjoy a beer or glass of house wine in the very large, family-friendly beer garden. There are ample tables and things for the kids to do while you bask in the sunshine. There is also a small animal enclosure which houses Alpaca's, Goats, Ducks, Chickens Rabbits and cute little Guinea Pigs. You can either purchase animal feed for a small fee at the bar or during the weekends and Holidays your children can be booked in for a 20 minute ;nimal experience' where they are escored into the enclosures and are able to see all the animals upclose and personal. If you have dogs, please bring them along as the Burre is very dog friendly, not surprising as the landlord has themselves. If you love Karaoke, Quiz nights, live bands, poker nights, and charitable events you will be right at home, as we have a sprinkling of all these throughout the year, please check our page or website for details. The Burre has a games room with a pool table and dartboard so if your ideal afternoon features a game of Killer then come on down. We have also created a competition sports bar where we have another pool table and dart board and this has proven very popular with our own regulars and visiting local teams. In addition we also have regular free pool days, phone or check our website for more information. Lastly, we look forward to seeing you down at the Burre!!

Tuesday 20th October at The Robert Burre, Great Clacton.

We’re delighted to welcome Vanessa Mitchell, former owner of The Cage at St Osyth, for a fascinating evening talking about what it was really like to live inside a building with one of the most notorious paranormal reputations in Essex.

The Cage began life as the old St Osyth village lock-up and has long been associated in local folklore with the infamous Essex witch trials of 1582. Tradition says that accused witch Ursula Kemp may have been held there before her trial, although historians point out that no surviving primary record conclusively proves she was imprisoned in that particular building.

Centuries later, Vanessa Mitchell moved into The Cage and reported extraordinary experiences including unexplained noises, objects moving, apparitions and incidents she described as increasingly hostile. The house became internationally known among paranormal investigators and has appeared in television programmes and attracted ghost hunters from around the world.

Now you can hear the story from the woman who actually lived there.

Was it paranormal activity?
Was it the atmosphere of an extraordinary historic building?
Or is there something about The Cage that still refuses to be explained?

Come along, listen to Vanessa’s experiences and make up your own mind. πŸ‘»

✨ AN EVENING OF MEDIUMSHIP WITH NATHAN HORNE ✨
As autumn draws towards Halloween, join us within the historic walls of The Robert Burre, Great Clacton, for an intimate evening of mediumship, connection, hope and comfort.

Nathan's connection to Spirit Manifested after life dealt him traumatic cards.
Personal loss led him on an unexpected journey to a date with destiny through spirit.

When medium Stephanie Carr brought Kiah's messages of support through grief and new insight on purpose to him, Nathan took the words of this great grandfather to heart and allowed the guidance to become the seed of his new start and spiritual journey.
Nathan has since used this as fuel for his own passion to deliver messages of hope and comfort to those seeking guidance and support.

His platform debut in 2024 at Horley church became a full circle moment. The place where he first heard from spirit, and found his way to his own mediumship within John Haynes closed development circle, had now welcomed his own connection and distinctive voice to become the channel that offered comfort, guidance and support to others.

And perhaps there couldn't be a more atmospheric setting in which to welcome him.

The Grade II listed Robert Burre, formerly Burr's Farmhouse, has origins dating back centuries. With ancient timbers, an old protected yew tree and its own tales of ghostly inhabitants, it's a venue already steeped in history, atmosphere β€” and more than a little mystery.

And with All Hallows' Eve approaching and the veil thinning, who knows what you might see, sense or feel when mediumship meets a place with stories of its own?

The Robert Burre is more than just a pub.

Before the pints, bands and busy bar nights, this site was part of an old farmstead with roots stretching back into medieval Great Clacton. Records link the land to the Burre family centuries ago, with the name Robert Burre appearing in connection with the holding as far back as the 1400s, and possibly earlier.

The old farmhouse survived as the surrounding farmland gradually became the Great Clacton we know today, before eventually becoming The Robert Burre pub in 1976.

And then there is the other side of its history...

Over the years, modern occupants, staff and landlords have reported unexplained footsteps, strange noises, unusual movements and other incidents that have proved rather harder to explain.

Whether you believe in spirits or not, an old building that has witnessed centuries of ordinary lives, arguments, celebrations, deaths, farming families and changing generations was always going to collect a few stories along the way.

So when you sit with a pint at The Robert Burre, you are not just sitting in a local pub.

You are sitting inside a little piece of Great Clacton history.

And perhaps... you are not sitting entirely alone.
