This Father’s Day, we’d like to celebrate all the dads, grandads and father figures out there.

But we couldn’t do that without a special mention to our own…

Dave.

Back in 2011, Dave and Sally swapped Yorkshire for the Lake District with what seemed like a sensible plan: a quieter life and a little bit of semi-retirement.

A year later, they bought Broadrayne Farm.

As it turns out, transforming a working farm into holiday cottages, a restaurant, a hotel and a thriving hospitality business isn’t exactly what most people have in mind when they talk about retirement.

From day one, Dad threw himself into building the foundations of what The Yan has become today.

From the broadband and Wi-Fi across the farm, to the telecoms, technology, maintenance projects and countless behind-the-scenes improvements, so much of what our guests rely on is there because Dad has spent years making sure it works properly.

If something isn’t working quite as it should, there’s a good chance Dad is already working on it.

While Jess, Gee and Pete now lead the day-to-day operation, Dad is still around the farm most days, solving problems, improving systems, keeping an eye on all the crazy car parking and making sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.

The truth is, retirement never really suited him.

So this Father’s Day, we’d like to say thank you.

Thank you for the vision, the determination, the expertise and the years of hard work that helped create the place so many people now love.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad. We love you as much as you love Bradford City.

And Happy Father’s Day to all the dads celebrating today.

We’ve got a very important Cumbrian question.

When someone says they’re “just popping out for a quick walk” near Grasmere… how long are they actually gone for?

Because around here, “quick walk” can mean:

20 minutes round the lane
3 hours up Helm Crag
A full day out because someone said “we may as well carry on”
Or getting absolutely drenched and pretending it was character building...

We love hearing where people end up when they stay with us at The Yan, especially when the plan changes halfway through because the view, the weather or the pub got involved.

So tell us, what’s your favourite proper local walk near Grasmere?

The one you’d recommend to guests, friends, family or anyone who thinks the Lakes is just a pretty view from the car window.
