"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. πŸŽ€

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. πŸ’—

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

πŸ’— This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.πŸ’•

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

Great to see Pete and Linda making the headlines!

A couple who have spent nearly 20 years working side by side at a supermarket have tied the knot after 30 years together.

Congratulations, Pete and Linda!

Congratulations, Pete and Linda!

Congratulations to Pete and Linda from our Grantham store who've got married after 30 years of being a couple.

They got engaged earlier this year when Pete proposed over an Asda Bistro Marry Me Chicken meal and bottle of Ch*****ne. The couple started working at the store on the same day in November 2006 as seasonal colleagues after returning from living abroad – and have been there ever since.

Linda said: "It was just before Christmas, so we got seasonal jobs at the store… and we've been there ever since. Pete's on grocery/warehouse and I'm on front end. We work the same days and often bump into each other at work. We have our breaks together too. We really enjoy our jobs and our colleagues are great. They had a whip round and got us some lovely wedding presents."

Asda Grantham's community champion Sally said: "Everyone at the store wishes Pete and Linda many more happy years together, filled with love, laughter and wonderful memories."

Well done, Harry!
12/08/2026

Well done, Harry!

Eleven-year-old Harry sees the trolley supporting Grantham Foodbank each time he goes shopping at our Grantham store with his mum Hayley – so decided he wanted to do something special to help them.

Harry has cerebral palsy and earlier this year his mum and her friend Debby hosted The Evergreen Ball to raise money for Leeds Children's Hospital after Harry underwent spinal surgery there a few years ago. The event at Belton Park Golf Club raised Β£1,100 – with Β£800 going to the hospital, and the remaining Β£300 going to buy food and everyday essentials for the food bank.

Harry, Hayley and Debby met up with Asda Grantham's community champion Sally, before going round the store to buy their items. She said: "Harry was so excited picking things for the food bank and choosing things he knew other children would like. What a wonderful example of kindness, generosity, and compassion. The world needs more people like Harry."

Hayley said: "We are all so proud of Harry, he's such a kind kid. He's an empath, and likes to give back. Although Debby and I were with him, it was very much led by Harry, he decided what went in the trolleys. He absolutely loved it and had a big grin on his face all the way round – and he had to use the Scan & Go machine himself. He picked things that he thought children would like. When we got to the food bank they were overwhelmed and so thankful and Harry got lot of cuddles too. We've been coming to shop at Asda for years, as they've got a special trolley which is easier for Harry sit in."
