A fifth of Britain’s fish and chip shops are planning to shut their doors within a year as suppliers and owners struggle to absorb spiralling costs.📈
Chancellor John Healey is expected to increase the adult minimum wage by 3.9% to £13.20 an hour from next April.
The pay for workers aged 18 to 20 is also set to rise to roughly £11.27.
But small business owners say they cannot keep absorbing costs without urgent government help.
Harry Niazi, who owns Olley’s Fish Experience in Herne Hill, says the pressure on everyday operations is rapidly mounting.
He explained: "One of my suppliers said their fuel bill has increased by £2,000 a week.
"Suppliers and small businesses can absorb only so much before customers face higher prices, or businesses have less money for recruitment, training and investment."
Industry bosses are calling on the Treasury to slash VAT from 20% to 10% to prevent further business closures.
Earlier this year, figures showed that a fifth of chippies were already planning to close within 12 months due to rising bills and staffing overheads.
Meanwhile, pub industry figures revealed that nearly two venues closed every day during the first three months of the year across England, Scotland, and Wales.
National Federation of Fish Friers president Andrew Crook warned that high input costs and a heavy tax burden are taking a severe toll on hospitality.
