Last summer on board, this Vanilla Baked Rice Pudding surprised us all. Comforting (isn't that what rice pudding just is!) but with bright summery mango and toasted peanuts.

Warm, creamy, softly spiced, but with a summery edge that Head Chef Jack felt was just right what we do here on the cafe.

Menus move, seasons shift, and part of the magic is letting certain dishes live exactly where they belong, in a season ☀️

But so many of you loved it that we couldn’t let it disappear completely.

Instead, we thought we’d share it with you, so you can recreate a little piece of last summer on the cafe, at home 👉

A favourite from last summer at the River Exe Cafe. This Vanilla Baked Rice Pudding with mango and peanut rice pudding brings warm comfort with a fresh, summery twist.

Pan roasted fish, with the pea & bacon fricasse! A plate that feels unmistakably British in early summer: fresh, vibrant, comforting and refined all at once!

Head Chef Jack tell us that pan-roasting is about respect. It's the simplest way to showcase beautifully fresh fish; crisp skin, delicate flesh, nothing hidden and nowhere to hide.

The fricassée is where the season comes into play. Peas are at their absolute best right now, and there's a natural affinity between peas and bacon that's been celebrated in British cooking for generations. The sweetness of the peas, the savoury depth of the local bacon and the freshness of the fish create the sort of harmony that's at the heart of Devon cooking.

Honest ingredients, thoughtfully prepared, allowing the season to do most of the talking.

If you're with us often you've probably noticed this but the light on board is never quite the same twice.

We see this daily. It shifts with the tide, catches the clouds as they drift overhead, and dances across the water before finding its way through our windows. Some mornings it's soft and silvery, wrapped in estuary mist.

Other days it's golden, warm and bright, spilling across tables and coffee cups alike.

Our quiet reminder that every day on the Exe brings something different, and somehow, that's where the magic lives. And a reason to visit more we'd say!

A handful of tables (3+ people...) have become available this Thursday, 11th June, due to last-minute cancellations.

So if you've been trying to find a spot on board, now might be your chance.

Summer, boat out, morning coffee on the pontoon, bliss! ❤️

When the weather is on your side, own boat pontoon open from when the big flags are up (usually about 11 a.m...ish!).

Once the big flags are flying, the hatch -and own boat pontoon - is open!

Coffee, cold drinks, Willow & Finch cookies, people perched on the pontoon in the sunshine, boats coming and going, the estuary doing its thing in the background.

Then from midday, food starts leaving the kitchen and the whole place slowly slips into that laid-back River Exe Café feeling we all know and love.

No booking needed for the hatch or own-boat pontoon! Just rock up and settle in for a while.

* we can't guarantee space on the own boat pontoon, so it's very much pot luck, and might mean sharing one of the benches but that's part of the fun!
