"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

Well done Federica!

Well done Federica!

A mum has thanked Asda colleague Federica for the kindness she showed her when her autistic son was getting overwhelmed while shopping in our Ellesmere Port store.

The customer said her son, who is also non verbal, was struggling a bit and, without his wheelchair for support, she found herself sitting on the floor with him, trying to comfort him while feeling overwhelmed herself. Federica heard the little boy crying and went over to check that he was okay. She then noticed his mum was sitting on the floor too and immediately wanted to make sure she was okay as well. When she got closer, Federica said: "It's ok, I have an autistic child too."

The lady posted on Pride in the Port Facebook group to thank Federica, saying: "I just sat on the floor with my son because in that moment all I can do is offer comfort and you went out your way to check he was okay and reassure me I'm doing a brilliant job! The world needs more people like you. Your kindness didn’t go unnoticed!"

Federica, whose nine-year-old son Gabriele is autistic, said: "I told the lady that I had an autistic boy myself and I know how she felt. I feel so much empathy for mums in general, especially those with children with special needs. The lady's comments on Facebook were lovely, I did not expect them. When I read them I was crying like a baby. It made my day."

Congratulations to Chronically Supported CIC who were recently successful in their application to The Asda Foundation.

The £500 funding will be used to provide refreshments, fruit, craft materials and board games for their free support group which supports people living with long term health conditions.

The group helps to reduce loneliness and isolation, improve wellbeing, encourage new friendships and create a welcome space for peer support and community connection.

A fantastic achievement and a wonderful use of funding to support the local community!

A very happy retirement to our much-loved bakery department twins Carol and Pauline.

Carol's been at the store for 33 years and Pauline for 32. They'd both previously worked at Lewis's hypermarket before it was taken over by Asda. The 65-year-olds, who also live next door to each other, love going on holiday together and plan more travels in the future.

Our store's community champion Adele said: "We wish you both lots of happiness in your next chapter. You’ll certainly both be missed by everyone. Good luck and enjoy every minute."

What a fantastic Sunday hosting our second Tickled Pink Afternoon Tea.

This year we brought the fun to Joeys Birkenhead, and it was nothing short of spectacular.

I was joined by Ian, our brilliant Community Champion from Arrowe Park and Helen-Louise, our amazing Bromborough Community Champion. Together we served up an afternoon full of laughter, delicious treats, and boobie bingo that had everyone smiling from start to finish.

Thanks to our incredibly generous party‑goers, we raised a whopping £1,095 for Asda’s Tickled Pink campaign, every penny helping to support life‑saving research, care and education.

A massive thank you to everyone involved, from our volunteers to our guests, for making the day so special. Your kindness, energy and support means the world.

I had the pleasure of helping The Friends of Elm Grove at one of their Summer Impact Days.

These days are a fantastic way to encourage local members of our community to come together, help maintain the park, meet the committee and volunteers and get involved in shaping the future of this much-loved local space.

Alison and the team have been doing such a fabulous job maintaining the park and it’s wonderful to see their hard work recognised with a Green Flag Award for the 5th year running!

A true testament to the dedication, passion and hard work of everyone involved. Well done to Alison and the whole team! 👏

Their last impact day will be on Sunday 13th September from 11am! 🌿
