Generations in the making
From award winning Slàinte Sauces coming soon an amazing new product/brand 😀
First a little introduction to our history 🏴
As we prepare for the launch of a new brand under ‘Oystercroft’ can you guess what it could be 🌶️
I wanted to share a little of the story behind the brand.
The photograph below includes father and his brother my Uncle Alan as young men at sea.
On the west coast islands of Scotland, you were often one of two things: a crofter or a sailor. Those with land worked the croft. Those without went to sea.
My family were seafarers.
The MacFadyens sailed from Tiree and the west coast islands for generations. My grandfather and great-grandfather were Cape Horners, part of a remarkable generation of sailors who rounded one of the most feared passages on earth under sail.
My late father, born in Port Ramsay on the Isle of Lismore, joined the puffers at just 15 years old, 6 years were spent delivering goods from Islay to the outer Hebrides before going on to sail the world. His stories took us from the Gulf where he learnt to swim,to Burma in the midst of a crisis, New York which involved apples, whisky and the mafia, the Mediterranean and beyond. Growing up, flavours and spices from distant shores were just as much a part of our table as mince and tatties.
I loved taking out an atlas saying dad were you here ?? More often than not a story followed.
In later years, coal on the fire ‘that will get us round the mull’.
I think that was kintyre’
She’s in ‘the doldrums’ about mum 😉
‘Not for the Minch tonight’
Those stories stayed with me.
Oystercroft is rooted in the islands, but it is also inspired by the wider world that generations of island sailors encountered and brought home with them.
As we begin this journey, I’m proud to honour the people who came before us and the paths they carved across the oceans.
Born of the islands. Shaped by the sea.
