Some problems are so large that we hardly know where to begin.
Hunger. Homelessness. War. Loneliness.
We care, but we can still feel powerless.
In St Matthew’s Gospel, the disciples are faced with a huge crowd and not enough food. Their first response is understandable: “Send them away.” Jesus refuses. He begins with what they actually have, five loaves and two fish.
This is not an easy claim that one small kindness will put everything right. It won’t. We still need justice, political action and the courage to ask why people are hungry in the first place.
But the size of the problem cannot become our excuse for looking away.
Most of us have something we can offer: an hour, a meal, a phone call, a listening ear, a voice that can speak up.
You can't do everything, but you can do something.
Where could it make a difference today?
