Every Thursday at the Himalaya cafe, join us for some chai and to write a letter to imprisoned activists!
Prison is inherently a very lonely place, and a letter is always appreciated. Come along to start a friendship and brighten someone’s day!
Don’t worry about bringing any materials - just bring yourself, a willingness to start up a (penp) conversation with a stranger, and an appetite for some drinks from the Himalaya Cafe!
Whether you’re fired up about the situation in Palestine or you want to have a conversation about prisons and alternative justice systems, you’ll find us around the Himalaya cafe at Thursday. Check out our Instagram for more updates!

Himalaya is truly a magical place — you never know who might walk through that red door.
Tonight, I had the lovely opportunity to meet Tushar Arun Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi ji. He and his wife are visiting Edinburgh for a few days and stopped by the café to say hello.
For me, and for so many Tibetan refugees, India will always hold a very special place in our hearts. When China took control of Tibet in the 1950s, India welcomed us, gave us a home, and made us feel safe and accepted.
I often wonder what my life would have been like if it weren’t for India.
Growing up and going to school there, we learned so much about the great Gandhi ji, and I was always deeply inspired by his teachings, compassion, and courage.
I will forever be grateful to India for many things, but most of all for everything this country has taught me about life, humanity, kindness, and resilience.
Tonight, meeting Mr. Tushar Gandhi truly felt special — I definitely felt the presence of Gandhi energy. It was such an honour to have them at the café, and I hope to see you both again soon 🙏☀️🌷💛

We first met Ethan a few years ago in the Himalaya. Like so many who organically discover these mountains, Ethan too somehow found his way to the cafe. And that’s the magic of the Himalaya — once you enter the cafe, no one ever really leaves.
And just like that, Ethan stopped by last week to say hello, all the way from sunny California, for a few days. We spoke about his music, and I asked if he might play some of his tunes as we gather together in community this coming Wednesday from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm.
It would be lovely to see you all. So come by the cafe — I will make the best chai in town.

A cause close to our hearts

For over a year, Himalaya Cafe has been supporting Sami, a young boy from my home town in the foot hills of Himalaya, who was born with severe muscular disabilities. With your help, we've been funding his physiotherapy — and the results have been wonderful, with Sami becoming more and more active.

Now Sami and his grand mother are facing homelessness after being evicted from their long-term home. We're extending our commitment to make sure they both have stability and security.

To help raise funds, we're setting up a charity stall right here in the cafe — full of wonderful, eccentric second-hand finds. So next time you're in for a chai, head downstairs and see what catches your eye. Every purchase goes directly to Sami and his family.

Our community has never just been Edinburgh — it stretches across the world. However you're able to help, it means everything. 🙏

See you soon. ❤️

We have a lovely little gathering at the café this evening. At Himalaya, we’ve always believed in supporting people, creativity, and community — it’s very much the philosophy behind the place. We are so much more than just a café.
When Skye got in touch to say she was visiting home in Scotland from Boston, had heard so much about Himalaya, and wondered if she could share some of her magical songs here, my answer was my usual one — of course!
So tonight we’ll have beautiful live music from Skye, delicious homemade Himalayan food, and what I still believe is the best chai in town. All donations from the evening will go directly to supporting Skye and her music.
If you don’t have much planned this evening, come by Himalaya and let us look after you with music, chai, warmth, and lovely food🫰🌸😇☀️💕

Dear Friends,

We've been overwhelmed with your generosity. If you've been round the cafe recently, you'll see brand new security shutters, a new till and cake counters, we've also renewed our insurance. We also had a wee bit left over money which we put towards our long term cause supporting Sammy, a boy with a muscular disability, in Reka's hometown in India.
Thank you again for spreading the love and we hope to send it back out into the world.

Peace and love 🙏

Himalaya is taking a day off today—even though Saturdays aren’t usually a day off for us. Our lovely chef is away for the weekend with friends, and although our amazing hostess Reka can handle just about anything on her own, she’s decided today should be a well-deserved rest day too.

I don’t believe we had any bookings for today, but if you were planning to visit, I’m very sorry—we’ll make it up to you next time!

Today is all about slowing down, resting, and enjoying a peaceful, easy Saturday 💕

Today at Himalaya Café, we experienced a very unfortunate incident — the café was broken into and items were stolen.
This morning, I wasn’t sure how I was going to face the day. I had been looking forward to being at the café as always, but everything felt different. Friends stopped by to check in, and while we all felt the sadness of what happened, their kindness reminded me of something deeper.
I often believe that moments like these carry meaning. There’s a Tibetan saying I hold close to my heart:
“Tragedy should be utilized as a source of strength. No matter what sort of difficulties, how painful the experience is, if we lose our hope, that’s our real disaster.”
Thank you to everyone who has shown love, support, and care for Himalaya Café. Seeing the community come together in times like this gives me real hope for a better world.
Your support means more than words can express. It gives me strength to keep going.
Thank you 🙏
