Hendersons - Eat Better Live Better Hendersons - Eat Better Live Better is a new restaurant started by Barrie Henderson in 2021

The original Hendersons on Hanover Street first opened in 1962, as an outlet for the produce for Janet and Mac Henderson’s organic East Lothian farm. It since became an iconic part of the Scottish food and drink scene for the last 58 years - unfortunately due to covid-19, Hendersons of Hanover Street, had to cease trading and close it’s doors, much to the dismay of it’s long standing customer base

. In order to save Janet’s legacy, Janet’s grandson Barrie Henderson decided they couldn’t let this travesty happen and opened this new restaurant which serves delicious vegetarian dishes, using fresh produce, and sustainable ingredients. Barrie was at the helm of Hendersons between 2012 till March 2020, and during his time in charge, Hendersons won several awards including Green Family Business of the Year 2018, Family Business of the Year 2016, and Best Vegetarian Establishment at the Food Awards in 2016, 2017 & 2019, among others. Barrie has always been a massive advocate of the values that Hendersons also stood for, such as using locally sourced wholefood and organic ingredients as much as possible. The menu is accessible enough for everyone but also contains plenty of options for people with specific dietary requirements.

We’ve got some lovely new spring dishes on our menu - like our handmade potato gnocchi with marinated white beans, slow-roasted sun-dried tomato, rainbow chard, wild garlic pesto, toasted pine nuts + parmesan shavings.

We love this dish as it can also be vegan, it’s made with seasonal ingredients like wild garlic pesto and rainbow chard and adds protein to your diet through the beans.

Planting out our edible flowers for the year ahead in the restaurant’s back garden. We used the compost that we made from composting our veg scraps & coffee grounds, and we collected seaweed from Fife over the winter, so it’s all organically fertilised.
Our garden is small but mighty and we love using it to grow things we can use in the kitchen but also helps the bees and other wildlife in the middle of Edinburgh.
The blackbirds who are nesting in the back garden also really enjoyed the odd worms that came to the surface while planting and were following us about!

Spring has not only arrived in our kitchen but also in our back garden 🍄‍🟫

Last year our amazing mushroom supplier Rhyze Mushrooms hosted a mushroom growing workshop at our restaurant. Together, we enoculated these tree logs with shiitake spores and we were really excited to see that they’ve just come back again for the third time!

If you don’t know Rhyze Mushrooms already, they’re a wonderful social enterprise growing mushrooms at Lauriston Farm - and they’re where we get our oyster mushrooms from, too!

Our chefs are embracing the changing seasons, and with that, some of our winter dishes will soon be making way for all the lovely spring ingredients slowly arriving in our kitchen.

If there’s something you’ve been meaning to try, or come back for, this weekend is the perfect time!
