☘️ Tonight is the Summer Solstice. The longest day of the year. And long before anyone built a church or drew a border on a map, the Irish were already up on a hilltop with a fire lit, marking this exact moment.

Midsummer, known in Irish as Grianstad an tSamhraidh, meaning the sun's standstill, is one of the oldest seasonal celebrations in the Irish calendar, a night when the community climbed to the high ground, built the biggest fire it could manage, and stayed there until the sun came back. Not because anyone told them to. Because the land and the sky made it obvious that something was happening, that this night was different from other nights, that the sun at its highest point deserved acknowledgment from the people it had been keeping alive all year. The bonfires were lit on hilltops so they could be seen across the countryside, one community's fire visible to the next, a chain of light across Ireland marking the same moment from every high place simultaneously. Irish folklore held that the veil between this world and the other one grew thin on Midsummer's Eve, that the hawthorn tree at the field's edge was more dangerous tonight than usual, that the music you might hear drifting on the air after dark was not music you should follow.

What I find most compelling about Midsummer in the Irish tradition is how completely it belongs to the land rather than to any institution. Nobody owns midsummer. No church, no government, no heritage organization. It is simply the longest day, the highest sun, the shortest darkness, and the Irish response to it has always been the same: get outside, light something, and be with the people around you. Your ancestors stood under this same sun on this same date thousands of years ago and understood it as sacred. Tonight, step outside for a minute. Look up. Drop where in the world you are celebrating from in the comments.. ☘️

💙 Happy Father’s Day from all of us at Dundrum Inn. 💙

Here’s a big cheers to all the dads out there today. 🍻

OPEN FOR BREAKFAST 9-11.30
LUNCH 11-7pm

To the grandads, the stepdads, the father figures, and the mums who have stepped in and done the job when dad is no longer here.

We also know that Father’s Day can be difficult for many people. If you’re missing your father today, call in and have a quiet glass with us, share a story, or simply take a moment for yourself.

We treat this day with respect because we understand it means something different to everyone.

Whether you’re celebrating, remembering, or somewhere in between, you’re always welcome here.

❤️ Cheers from all of us at Dundrum Inn.
