Dagmar Mountaineering Club

Dagmar Mountaineering Club Dagmar is a mountaineering club based in Dumfries & Galloway and affiliated to Mountaineering Scotland.

DAGMAR mountaineering club is basically open to anyone who likes climbing mountains in the pouring rain, seeing nothing, feeling pain and comparing your soggy piece to the gourmet buffet carried by your colleague. We do occasionally get some sunshine, however bronzed athletes we're not. The club is affiliated to the Mountaineering Council of Scotland and annual membership costs £20. The club curr

ently has 52 members (with a roughly 50/50 gender split) who come from a variety of backgrounds and on average about 12 - 15 people attend each monthly meet. An annual programme of meetings is prepared at the start of the year with actual dates circulated quarterly through direct e-mailing to members. We hold monthly meets often targeting munros in the summer with more local walks such as the Galloway Hills and Lake District in the winter. We also hold 5 weekend meets per year usually staying in private bunkhouses and have in previous years visited Skye, Lochaber, Cairngorms, Snowdonia, Torridon, Knoydart etc

Anyone interested in joining us would be more than welcome. We are a mixed group with some experienced climbers and some less so. There are a few crag rats amongst us, but not many that like dangling from little bits of rope. An interesting packed lunch is a must though and you will also need waterproofs, a rucksack and a pair of boots. Not one of our routine walks but one of our Stravaigs (to roam, wander about casually or aimlessly) lead by Mark to the Drumochter Munros of, Càrn na Caim and A'Bhuidheanach Bheag. Moody skys but clear views and no 🌧️. Great day and actually nice to feel the chill in the wind for the first time in a while! and some strange looking coffee to round the day off!

Our weekend trip to the Peak District staying at the youth hostel in Castleton, we had 2 cracking days walking. On Saturday we headed to Hathersage and walked Stanage edge and on Sunday we had a dander up Kinder Scout before heading back home. Weather was simply stunning, walking was slightly gentler than we are used to but we were very greatful for that in the heat that we had, all in all another great weekend with DAGMAR.

Just some of the photos from a fabulous weekend at Kintail, we stayed at Ratagan Youth Hostel, what a setting! Friday night we dined at the Glenelg Inn where a Helicopter landed on the front lawns and duly deposited its passengers at the pub, I like the style! Saturday the weather was perfect for walking and we were all rewarded with excellent views, various groups went out mainly concentrating on the Northern Ridge with the Brothers and Sisters whilst some went up a local Corbett. Sunday not so good weather and many tired legs still a smaller group managed the more remote Beinn Sgritheall and others took the ferry from Glen Elg over to Skye.
Yet another memorable weekend.

Saturdays trip to Cruach Ardrain and Ben Tulaichean from Balquhidder, the weather was somewhat extreme with high winds and snow, so having made it to the top of Ben Tulaichean on all fours!, a decision was taken not to continue on to Cruach Ardrain, the weather got the better of us on this occasion. However a good day was still had by all, and we all made it back down safely to enjoy a fish supper in Bridge of Allan.
It was also good to welcome Helen on her first walk with the group, hope to see her again.

MEET THE CLUB PRESIDENT
Claire, or Lady Claire as she likes to be addressed, has extensive experience of the mountains, both in her home territory of Galloway and further afield including Nepal, Picos de Europa, Camino Ingles, Jordan and the Drakensberg Mountains. If you see her on the hills, she will expect you to bow or curtsey in her presence!

Saturdays trip to the lakes, once again the weather was better than forecast, we had a grand walk taking in Steel Fell, Calf Crag and Helm Crag. Then back in plenty of time to drown our sorrows from the rugby scores with a pint in Grassmere, a perfect way to end a superb day.

Sundays trip to Ben Ledi, weather forecast was awful but we ventured up the road regardless, driving through some heavy showers, however on arrival at Callander the weather was much improved and whilst windy and cold it did remain dry and the wind was certainly not the forecast 50 to 60 mile an hour with -15 windchill.
All in all a very pleasant walk and well worth the trip up.

MEET THE MEMBERS

Mark is leading the charmed life of the single bachelor, which ends in a few months time when he gets married to the lovely Anna. The least dodgy car salesman you will ever meet, he has however been known to sell the odd yellow coloured car to friends. We won’t talk about the banana rum bothy incident. Those who were there blame him entirely.
