And just like that we've reached the end! I hope you've all enjoyed seeing them as much as I enjoyed making them, we cannot wait for next year! So, the final exhibit brings us to a time we would all probably rather forget....

Covid

Covid isn't a topic confined to our town, but the effects were felt here as much as they were across the world. Far from it being a time to remember it was a time where our great community came together while staying 2 metres apart.

It's the penultimate day of our tour, and today we are visiting the history of.....

The Fire Station

The town's fist fire station was created in 1938 on Priory Road, and for decades served the community as Downham's main station housing retained firefighters and their equipment. By the early 2000s the station was becoming outdated for modern fire service needs and was officially decommissioned in 2006. Rather than being demolished the old building was preserved and the Downham Market and District Heritage Society later restored it and transformed it into the Doscover Downham Heritage Centre which opened in 2016. After the Priory Road station closed a newer operational station was built at Ryston Close to better suit modern firefighting requirements. However, disaster struck in the early hours of 11 March 2014 when a major fire broke out inside the station itself and completely destroyed much of the building and a fire engine housed inside, thankfully nobody was injured. Despite the destruction emergency cover for the town continued almost immediately with the replacement appliances temporarily based nearby. The damaged buildings were demolished and replaced with a much larger more modern facility that officially opened in 2018.

The Festival

1974 and the late great Tinker Taylor used his mayoral allowance to create the first Downham Market Festival in response to concerns our great towns was declining. Now here we are over 50 years later still enjoying, family fun and great cake during a spectacular week of festivities. The events may have changed and as much as we would love to see the return of a tiddly winks tournament the same sense of joy Tinker Taylor created during the first Festival can still be felt today.

Another cake exhibit, another slice of history. Today we fast forward to.....

World War 2

RAF Downham Market was a significant Royal Air Force station during World War II, primarily serving as an auxiliary bas for RAF Marham. The station opened in July 1942 and played a crucial role in the operations of several squadrons, including 218 Squadron, 623 Squadron, 214 Squadron, 635 Squadron, 571 Squadron and 608 Squadron. These squadrons flew heavy bombers such as Short Stirling and Avro Lancaster, as well as de Havilland Mosquito light bomber. The station was equipped with the FIDO fog dispersal system, which was operational until the end of the war, adding in the safe landings of returning aircraft during foggy conditions. The stations legacy is marked by heavy losses with 139 aircraft destroyed and approximately 705 aircrew killed during operations.

After a quick break from our tour yesterday, we are back today with easily the most recognisable part of our town....

Our Clock Tower

The Downham Market Clock Tower, a grade II listed structure l, has a rich history dating back to it's construction in 1878. It was presented to the town by local businessman James Scott, who was also a draper, grocer and clothier. The Clock stands 33 feet tall and features an octagonal base with a dedication to James Scott carved into it at waist height, and a cuboid Clock chamber. It was designed to be illuminated at night by gas light l, which was a novelty at the time. The clock tower has played a central role in the social and civic life of Downham Market for over 140 years and has only needed one major refurbishment in 2004 l. The clock tower is now run by an electric motor and is illuminated at night, thanks to the lights installed during the 2004 refurbishment.

Today, our museum tour takes a turn, today let's talk....

Riots

It wasn't always quiet here, in 1816 the town was the centre of the "Bread or Blood" riots. Local labourers, struggling with starvation and high prices after the Napoleonic wars marched the town demanding money and destroying property. The government responded by calling in the military to control the riots, with those deemed troublesome arrested, imprisoned, deported or hanged.

Another day, another cake exhibit. Today we are heading to....

St. Winnold's Fair

Thousands of people, and horses, used to flock to Downham Market for the St. Winnold's Fair every March 3. It was one of the biggest horse sales in Europe, at it's height more than 10,000 horses were bought and sold during each fair. The sale always began on March 3, or St. Winnold's day, and the festivities, originally held in fields between the village of Boughton and Wereham, later moving to Downham in the early 1800s, became known as St.Winnolds Fair. The event is still remembered to this day in a procession through the town.

Today's exhibit has a royal connection....

Charles I

It is true our region is now stranger to a royal visit, but none quite compare to the one that bought a fugitive Charles I to Downham Market. On May Day in 1646, King Charles I came to Downham Market to hide after the Battle of Naseby where he reportedly hid in an inn located on the High Street. He disguised himself as a clergyman in a bid to avoid being captured by Parliamentary forces, his prospect were bleak and his options running out. Sadly for him, his stay in our town did not bring about a change in fortunes, only a transformation in his appearance, where he is said to have had his hair cut and to have bought a new hat.

The Market

Downham Market is one of the oldest Market towns in Norfolk, with its origins going all the way back to the Dark Ages. The town achieved its Market status in 1046 from Edward The Confessor and continues to thrive today, nearly a thousand years later.
