Peru started like this..

Coffee in Lima and the most delicious crème caramel from .mas.lima and top class coffee from

Flight to Chiclayo then by car to Jaen and Finca El Morito and our first cupping.

Some excellent coffees from San Ignacio and a great introduction to the quality of Cajamarca coffees to come.

Also a little taste of the vastness of Peru and the difficulty of moving around on the dirt and gravel mountain roads. Landslides and car accidents. When someone tells you it's 5 hrs drive... they really mean 7 😉

Then a visit to and Ebert Huaman. The farm tour was crazy. Steep wet slopes made for an adventure never to be forgotten. Cupping their coffees was an incredible treat. The Geisha's were incredible. A huge day finished off with a traditional bbq and cervezas.

Early start with no choice but an early 5am rise with the most incredible dawn chorus with donkeys , chickens, dogs and much more.

Three new releases this week , the first is the welcome return of something juicy and funky from Luz Angela Rojas and an anaerobic natural Chiroso. The second has special meaning in that it was the first farm I visited back in 2016. A classic natural Bourbon from Fernando Lima and his farm Santa Elena perched on the side of the Santa Ana volcano in El Salvador. Finally our latest Colombian EA decaf.

Some special visitors at Skyways this week (of course you're all special) including Phil and Cleo. I setup a little cupping for them with our latest releases and we talked and talked. Drank coffee and talked more.

Finally, it's summer holiday time and even we need a break. As it happens the whole team (3 of us) will be away during August at different (but overlapping) times. There may be a few delays to orders.

Oh, and I'm heading to Peru next weekend with Khipu Coffee | Peruvian Coffee and will be meeting some of the producers we've had lovely coffee from this year.. including Marcos Herrera Mamaruntu . 🇵🇪

Two new releases this week and both the result of intentional inoculations applied with methodical and rigorous approaches to create specific flavour profiles.

The first from the maetsro Wilton Benitez and the third time we've had this crazy Anaerobic thermal shock inoculated Geisha in the last four years. Based on yesterday's public cupping (thank you everyone who came), we've taken the unprecedented step of releasing this coffee with two different roast profiles. One fast and light specifically suited to filter brewing, the other our usual 'omni' approach with more body and sweetness that suits any brewing method. We've also added a 2 x 125g option with 125g of each profile so you can see the influence of roast style on cup profile.

The second release comes from an idea between coffee friends Mike and Eustache on Lucia Solis's fermentation training camp a couple of years ago. A Rwandan classic washed Red Bourbon that underwent inoculation with bacteria and yeast strains.

Another great turnout at the weekend's cupping event. Thanks to all those who attended and made it such an engaging and enjoyable session.

It's no secret that I'm a fan of the fermentation work of Lucia Solis. It shouldn't surprise you that I'm also a huge fan of James Hoffman and his educational material. These two big-hitters of coffee education have come together and released a fabulous informative video describing what fermentation is and how it is typically used in coffee processing. Watch this.

Two new easy drinkers released this week, the first a washed Colombian regional blend from Huila called 'Mandarino'. The other is our 2nd micro-lot from Mantiquiera de Minas in Brazil and Sitio Da Torre.

Our goodies finally arrived back from Brussels and one of the boxes contained a plethora of coffee from various roasters at the show. Some swaps and some purchases we made. We'll make a selection (there are a lot) of some of the most interesting and add these to the table for next weekend's public cupping (Sat 25th at 11am). Spots for the cupping are limited and booking is essential.

Just a few highlights from the last few days at World of Coffee in Brussels.

We got through the first day without our coffee arriving by the kind and generous gifts and assistance from friends and other roasters we’d never met before. Our coffee arrived at the end of Day 1 and during the 3 days we had our bar occupied by exporter, importer and producer friends and . All very special moments.

So great to catchup with producer friends from Brazil, Ashok and his family from India, from Costa Rica, , .benitez92 , .cafe amongst others.

Special visits also from the lovely folk and a couple of fellow alumni from .coffee.excellence.center and great to catchup with .

We couldn't have done this without Ilse and Phillip from who helped more than they know. The producer event they ran in their cafe was quite special with the big guns of Colombian coffee in attendance. They brewed up our coffees alongside their own and another roaster friend and sold some of our retail in their lovely store.

We had amazing feedback on the brand, our coffees, packaging etc and hopefully we'll pick up some new customers outside our normal catchment.

It's easy to quantify the cost spent. Impossible to quantify the positive energy and feel good vibes received for our small team and small business.

We also have some special guests coming to our stand where you’ll be able to taste some of their fresh crop coffees and have a chat:Thursday: 12-1 Kira from Deya Bensa with washed, natural and anaerobic washed Rumudamo coffees.Friday: 12.15 - 2.00 Oscar and Eva from Nogales.Saturday 10-12: JP Suarez from Inmaculada Coffee farms.

Across the 3 days you’ll be able to taste our coffees and buy retail at our good friends cafe as part of a takeover event.Voort X Velvet, Rue Antoine Dansaert 54, 1000 Bruxelles.They’re hosting a special breakfast with champions of Colombian coffee on Friday morning 9-11. The roastery will be closed from Wednesday 24th through to our return on Monday 29th June.

Two new arrivals to announce this week. The first from Kerehaklu Estate in India and another fruit forward anoxic natural. The second is a sweet and clean washed Peruvian coffee from the Cusco highlands.

Also a little reminder of the roastery closure at the end of this month as we head to World of Coffee in Brussels from 24th to 26th. Orders placed after midday on 23rd June will be processed on our return on the 29th. This also menas that the beginning of July subscriptions will go out a little later than usual. We'll aim to process these on the 30th June or 1st July.

We'll be brewing two stunners on the stand. A natural Geisha from Marcos Herrera and his farm Mamaruntu in Amazonas in Peru, and a bonkers Anaerobic Thermal Shock washed Laurina from Edinson Argote and his farm Quebraditas.

In addition we'll be meeting up with friends and and will be having a little brewing session with their coffees on our stand .

Plus a reminder we've been invited to be part of a bar takeover in Brussels for the duration of the event. Our coffee will be on the shelves for sale and being brewed with some of the industries best equipment provided by and .

Three new releases to announce for the forthcoming new month, two from Marcos Herrera and his farm Mamaruntu in Amazonas Peru, and the third from Fazenda Serra Tres Barras in Mantiqueira Brazil.

An early announcement for your diaries. We're heading to the 'World Of Coffee' expo 24th to 28th June in Brusssels. This means the roastery will be closed over that period and any orders placed after midday Tuesday 23rd June will be processed on our return on Monday 29th.

We've been pleasantly surprised at the numbers of people that have popped in to Skyways over the last few months. We're open for beverages and coffee sales during the week Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm. Way before Crankhouse was even a twinkle in my eye I'd seen the growth of artisan roasting and retail operations back in Australia and we've adopted one of the things that drew me into this world. If you visit us to buy your coffee we'll make you a drink free of charge. ie. your coffee is on us.

Just one new releases to announce and it's the 4th from father and son duo Ajoy & Pranoy Thipaiah from Kerehaklu Estate in India.

A couple of snaps from yesterday's day out to LCF. As in the last 5 years or so we were lucky to be invited by the fabulous folk at Espresso Solutions for a brewing spot on their stand and we took two of our latest releases as well as a little merch for sale. Jack and Fran manned the stand whilst I shmoozed. For me these events are about meeting old friends and making some new ones and this year I had the pleasure of meeting up with Oscar Hernandez from Nogales farm in Colombia along with his partner Eva and an old friend Will Corby from PACT coffee. It's not often I've been able to personally hand back a bag of coffee to the producer and this one felt particularly special. I also met another old friend Roger Zapata who is now representing Wilder Lasso here in the UK. I came away with some green samples from both and we'll be turning them brown this coming week and hopefully we'll make a selection and a few will appear on the list in the future.

It's always a pleasure meeting fellow roasters and business owners and I wanted to make special mention of Chris Bell from Bell's Beans in Surrey. Our stories are familiar and Chris started his business in his garage and runs a weekly market stall. We did a little coffee swap and two of Chris's latest coffees will be on the table at our next public cupping.

Three new releases to announce. The first is another Colombian gem from Inmaculada Fellows Farm project and a minimal intervention washed Gesha. The second is the return of a boozy fruit bomb from the Cereza coffee company and a Natural 'Remonta' processed under guidance from Colombian guru Hernando Tapasco. Finally a classic washed easy drinking regional Mexican coffee from the Sierra Sur region of Oaxaca.

Green importer Sucafina are coming to Skyways to host a cupping of freshly landed Kenyan coffees on Wednesday 20th May at 9.30am. Mat North from Sucafina will take us through the samples and if you're interested to see this part of the buying process and how we select coffees then you're welcome to attend. Please drop us a line to let us know you're coming.
