💚 Bowls Basics – How Do You Know Which Bowl Belongs to Which Player? 🤔

If you've been watching the Commonwealth Games, you may have wondered...

How do players know which bowls belong to who?

Every player uses a unique set of stickers or symbols on their bowls. These are called engravings or identification stickers, and they're placed on both sides of each bowl.

Because every player's design is different, it's easy for everyone to identify which bowls belong to which player, even when they're all gathered around the jack.

It's a simple idea, but it keeps the game flowing and avoids any confusion!

💚 Bowls Basics – Can You Knock Your Opponent's Bowl Away? 🤔

Absolutely... and sometimes it's the best shot you can play! 💥

While many bowls are gently drawn towards the jack, players can also choose to play a drive – a faster shot designed to move bowls already in the head.

You might use a drive to:
🎯 Knock an opponent's bowl away from the jack.
🎯 Move the jack into a better position.
🎯 Break up a difficult head.
🎯 Create a scoring opportunity for your team.

It's all part of the strategy of bowls. Sometimes the perfect shot is a gentle draw, and sometimes it calls for a little more power!

That's one of the reasons bowls is so much more tactical than many people realise.

💚 Bowls Basics – What Is the Mat? 🤔

At the start of every end, you'll see players place a small rectangular mat on the rink.

So... what's it for?

The mat is where every bowl must be delivered from. A player must have at least one foot on or over the mat when they release their bowl.

But it's much more than just a starting point!

By moving their position on the mat slightly to the left or right (within the rules), players can change the angle of their shot. This can make it easier to draw around other bowls or play a different line to the jack.

It's a small piece of equipment that can make a big difference to your next shot.

💚 Bowls Basics – Why Don't You Aim at the Jack? 🤔

This is one of the biggest surprises for people watching bowls for the first time...

You don't actually aim straight at the jack! 😲

That's because bowls aren't perfectly round. They have a built-in bias, which makes them curve as they travel.

Instead of aiming directly at the jack, bowlers pick a point on the rink to aim towards. As the bowl slows down, the bias gently brings it back towards the jack.

Think of it like taking a bend in the road 🚗 – you don't drive at the edge of the corner, you take the correct line to reach where you want to finish.

Getting the right line and the right weight is what makes bowls such a fascinating game. It takes skill, practice and a little bit of strategy!

💚 Bowls Basics – How Heavy Is a Bowl? 🤔

Have you ever wondered how much an indoor bowls bowl weighs?

Most indoor bowls weigh around 1.3–1.5kg (3–3¼lbs), although the exact weight depends on the size of the bowl.

That's about the same as:
🥛 A 2-pint bottle of milk.
🍍 A whole pineapple.
💻 A lightweight laptop.

They're heavy enough to roll smoothly and accurately, but not so heavy that you need lots of strength to play.

In fact, indoor bowls is all about technique rather than power. A smooth, controlled delivery will always beat trying to throw the bowl harder.

💚 That's one of the reasons indoor bowls is a sport that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy.
