Chatteris Christmas Lights really does Need You!!
As the new year began in 2024 the County Council informed us we needed to upgrade the electrical system that powers the lights due to it being over 35 years old and not meeting current requirements, they gave us until October 2027 to complete the work if we wanted to continue installing the Christmas Lights.
Electrical contractors quoted to do the work costing over £60,000 so a 3 year plan was put together with volunteers doing the work and financial support for the equipment needed from Chatteris Town Council a team started work to replace over 300 plug sockets, 2,400 meters of cable and 30 power supply distribution boards.
In 2025 we got loads done, we had an influx of new volunteers offering to help and completed a third of the project within 6 work weekends.
In 2026 we have had 2 work weekends so far with only a couple people coming to help we are now behind schedule and this is very concerning due to only having 4 people this weekend we didn’t meet our target and really need additional volunteers to join us.
Our regular lights installation volunteers already give up around 18 days each year to put up/ take down the lights we can’t ask much more for them. Our 8 committee members are now giving up over 40 days of their time each year to ensure the lights can continue but we need more people to help.
You don’t need to have electrical knowledge to get involved there’s a task for every skill set and we really do need the help.
If we don’t have the project complete by October 2027 then the lights won’t be able to go up until it is done.
If you want the lights to continue and you can spare half a day, a day or a weekend during any of the below dates please contact me otherwise it really will be the end of the lights.
We start at 9am have a tea break, lunch break and finish around 4pm
11th - 12th July
15th - 16th August
19th - 20th September
We are also desperately needing new volunteers to assist with putting up the lights starting 10th October if you can help please get in touch
