The American bass-baritone (April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was born in Princeton, New Jersey, on this day in 1898.

How the Bond Began-The 1928 Meeting: Robeson accidentally encountered a group of unemployed, striking Welsh miners from the Rhondda Valley who had walked all the way to London to protest poverty.Musical Solidarity: Hearing them sing in the streets, Robeson recognized a deep emotional parallel between their working-class struggle and African American spirituals. He joined their ranks, sparking a lifelong comradeship.
