From the very first weeks of life, babies make automatic, instinctive movements - primitive reflexes - that are essential to early development. As children grow, these reflexes are gradually absorbed into the nervous system, replaced by more mature patterns of movement and response.

🌱 When this integration is supported, it can open up a new freedom in how children move, feel and engage with the world. Where reflexes haven't fully integrated, the effects can quietly show up as difficulties with concentration, coordination, emotional regulation or sensitivity.

This gentle, fascinating approach has something to offer every parent and practitioner who cares for children of all ages.

Come ready to relax, listen and move, the pace is easy and the exercises are gentle enough for everyone

So beautiful. We talk a lot in our Toddler groups about providing a nourishing environment for the senses. Protecting the rhythm of childhood allows this kind of deep, quiet concentration to unfold naturally. So proud to be part of a School that holds this space with such reverence 🕊️

It’s lovely to see students learning through their hands and working with the natural rhythm of the wood. 🌿

🌳 🪵 To understand the world you have to work with it.

Our Middle School students have been working at the pole lathe, a traditional, foot-powered woodworking tool used to shape green wood into objects like chair legs and bowls. With each press of the treadle, the wood spins; with each pass of the tool, the student learns to work with the natural grain of the material.

It’s a fully manual, rhythmic process - rich with sensory experience: the sound of the gouge, the feel of the motion, the visible transformation of wood into form. More than a skill, it’s a way of understanding the material world.

Woodwork is part of our Hard Crafts curriculum, alongside metalworking, stone carving, and blacksmithing. These subjects are powerful vehicles for learning across disciplines, connecting practical and expressive arts with physics, chemistry, mineralogy, and the social sciences.

Through Arts and Crafts students develop a genuine “can-do” attitude. They know
how things are made because they make them themselves. They can envision the steps needed to reach their goals, building confidence and motivation from real experience.

What a special journey for the children 🧵 Wonderful to see the care, patience creativity and perseverance they are developing through Handwork. It’s lovely to witness the gentle beginnings of craft in Toddler Group and seeing where those experiences can lead.
