I’m sat down after what feels like an amazingly slammed week. Uni students are back and discovering their coffee spots, locals are out enjoying the sun once the rain has cleared, and people are just all generally good vibes. It’s lovely - I’m shattered; thank you.

Just to remind you about a few things. I’m open Tuesday to Saturday 8am til 3pm. That’s 5 days a week (some people don’t seem to know this).

Also - when it rains - COME AND SIT INSIDE - there’s a door to the right hand side of the hatch tucked around the corner and seating inside available (if you still didn’t know); you can walk straight pass me to enter Oriel Ci Melyn

Lastly. I’ll be closing early this Wednesday as we’re celebrating birthdays together. Most likely by midday as the school has an inset day; so we thought we’d take advantage to have a little party.

The morning routine. Important for many.

I’m always asked what I drink as a barista.

Espresso to check we’re dialled in.

A flat white to check how the espresso is tasting in milk (sometimes an espresso can taste great on its own, but may need adjusting to cut through milk properly)

And a ‘bit ‘a batch’ - trying the filter coffee to make sure nothing untoward is going on.

I generally lose track of what I drink for the rest of the day. These days I stick with one milk drink, then it will be sporadically trying the espresso and maybe having sips of batch.

On my days off - 2 cups of filter and I’m more than done.

There you go. There’s your answer.

I don’t drink much more on the menu - apart from a mocha if I’m feeling fancy.

Loadsa new faces in the area recently which is nice to see. The space is welcoming. We all know each other. Get to know the space and you’ll come to love it.

Remember Oriel Ci Melyn is also based here. You can walk behind me to sit in some peace and quiet whilst admiring the artwork.

Yallah Coffee and NewGround are still available on the shelves. A fresh delivery from Cult Coffee Roasters arrived today, and another from Machina Coffee Roasters should be with me shortly.

It’s rare I get around to cupping coffee these days. I used to be really good at doing it; but as of late I either don’t have time, or by the time I get to cupping I just don’t want anymore coffee (it happens)

This is often the problem I find as a solo barista and coffee cupping events. I simply don’t want to go and drink (or try) yet more coffee at the end of the day.

However - when I do get to do it, I often enjoy the process.

It was so nice having a visit from Yallah Coffee the other week, and getting to try some of their recent coffees and learning a little about updated packaging.

They dropped a delicious washed Guatemalan coffee that has notes of peach, strawberry and jasmine. Unusual I think for this origin - and a pleasure as it cools down.

I’ve got plenty of crowd pleasers on the shelves from these guys, whilst NewGround hold down the natural fruity ones on the shelves.

Square Mile Coffee Roasters is now in the espresso hopper, tasting sweet and morish.

A candid rare moment sent to me by a lovely customer who quietly snapped this.

Sometimes it feels rare that I get these moments, but sometimes it can feel like too many.

The moments of too many lead to questions, but recognising the times of rarity makes up for the many.

That’s business on Whitchurch Road I’ve realised. This Christmas (I said it again) will be 6 years of Blake & Brew, and probably around 10 years that I’ve worked on this road in some capacity - and I love it.

I’m here Tuesday to Saturday, 8am - 3pm.

Pass on that message, some people yesterday thought I only opened a couple days of the week.

I keep my hours updated on Google as much as possible, and any notices of being closed for holiday or special occasions often pop up here too.

I also get called a ‘hidden’ gem.

I don’t shout personally as sometimes I think the coffee can speak for itself - I’m not one for shouting either, and if the community here fits you’ll find us; but I’d like as many as possible to come and find it too as it’s a weird and wonderful thing. (More wonderful than weird)

Open Tuesday - Saturday 8am til 3pm.

Currently waiting on a couple of deliveries to restock the shelves this week from Square Mile Coffee Roasters and re-introducing a roaster I haven’t had in the shop for some time NewGround.

It was also lovely to have a visit from familiar face Cal today from Yallah Coffee - looking forward to trying their latest offerings.

Currently have the last of a delicious washed Ethiopian from Mission Coffee Works in the hopper, one of my favourite roasters in terms of flavour of profile to have in the shop - it’s been a delight.

It’s been lovely to see the flow of parents on the school drop offs again. It’s all missed during the summer, so the routine coming back feels familiar and welcome.

I have a few random dates to fill you in on between now and Christmas (yes I said the word) - but more on that another day.

I’m back this week with tasty brews for you to enjoy after a delightful time ArcTanGent and a week with the little’un.

Coffee from James Gourmet Coffee Roasters in the hopper still, soon to be Mission Coffee Works in the coming week.

Astrid's Petite Cuisine pastries will be back this week too which I can’t wait for (Fridays and Saturdays).

I hope everyone enjoys the last couple days of the summer break before the kids are back in school. I’m here if you need a pick me up to get you through.

Reminder - I’m away ArcTanGent for a few days, then taking a week off with the little’un. Back September 1st.

The first day of the festival was phenomenal but I’m already ‘feeling my age’ - trying to look after myself this year.

I was originally coming on my own, but some friendly friends of friends found me as we both parked up and we pitched up together. I’ve already made them both coffee this morning.

My last few days pouring espresso before closing for 2 weeks.

My last day open is this Friday August 14th - then I’ll be closing until Tuesday September 1st.

The summer has been chill as expected in this area. It’s been nice, but also had its moments.

It’s been lush to see the student change over as they move out and move in - families coming and going on holidays.

I’ve been trying my best to use this time to relax as much as possible, but as you can imagine having a little’un of our own it’s also one of the busier times of the year as our routine gets thrown outta whack.

Next week as mentioned, I’ll be away at ArcTanGent - the list of bands is growing. Over 70 bands I’d be happy seeing - and the week after I’m aiming to spend quality time with my daughter.

Thank you again to all of my regulars and those who visit. This shop is something special and different. So many places say they offer community - but the people who come here are something different. There are no quiet moments. Everyone knows everyone and when you’re all together laughing and catching up it brings a smile.

Hopefully I’ll see you before I take the break, else catch you in September for the new school year 🤟

Morning all

There’s just another week or so before I’ll be closing up for a 2 week break - I’m heading to ArcTanGent (I’ve made a list of 69 bands to check out) and having a week with the little’un before school starts again.

My last day open before the break will be August 14th, then I’ll be back open as usual from September 1st.

I’ve got plenty of retail from Colonna Coffee and James Gourmet Coffee Roasters still on the shelves.

I’ve also got a fresher batch from Mission Coffee Works which will appear before I disappear.

Round Hill Roastery are currently on batch filter, a natural Colombian we’ll say is actually a rum punch - on espresso Colonna Coffee have supplied an ‘eco’ pulped natural (meaning no water used) - which has been quite punchy but delicious.

Hopefully I’ll catch you soon before I go ☺️

It’s been lovely and warm recently hasn’t it?

Just a reminder, I’m closed this Saturday as we’re heading off on a long weekend trip for Clare Blake birthday.

This means one day this week of pastries from Astrid's Petite Cuisine from me before their break, then over the summer it will be cakes as usual from Nicola Lawrence throughout the week.

I’ll be closing the last 2 weeks of August over the summer to attend ArcTanGent in the crowds, and have a week of recovery with the little’un before she goes back to school.

Colonna Coffee is on its way so it might hit the shelves before the weekend if you need a top up.
