Jack's Gelato

Jack's Gelato Local, fresh, mostly organic and always delicious ice cream. Made in Cambridge, by Jack.
(207)

After a life of making ice cream in restaurants and home kitchens I put everything I had into opening Jack's Gelato, back in 2010, and haven't looked back. I strive for perfection, making everything by hand in small batches and utilising THE best ingredients: organic milk and cream, organic and fair trade cocoa, organic and fair trade Madagascan vanilla, fruit, herbs and the occasional vegetable from my allotment and the allotments of friends.

SECRET secret flavour durian series!

For the next 5 days we will have a new durian flavour each day. As durian is somewhat of an acquired taste and could shock the uninitiated we are running this as a secret secret series to avoid the chance of anyone ordering it unwittingly without really knowing what they are getting themselves into (and then wasting the precious durian). Kicking things off today with a delightful durian meringue. If you would like a scoop then be sure to ask for the secret secret flavour and not just the secret flavour : )

Sheep.

Such wonderful creatures. With their well-known lack of independant minds they are not exactly our spirit animal here but we love them nonetheless! On occasion we are also lucky enough to enjoy their milk. It does not lend itself naturally to ice cream as it does not have the desired ratios of proteins and fat but the flavour makes it worth the effort in finding a way to make it work. Our favourites are:

Sheep’s Milk fior di Latte. Here we add just enough Estate Dairy double cream to bring enough fat without masking the delicate taste of the ewe’s milk

Sheep’s Milk Dulce de Leche . We cook down vast amounts of sheep’s milk to caramelised the proteins and sugars. The least sheepy tasting one.

Sheep’s Yoghurt. Cultured in-house, of course. Full on sheep flavours.

We are delighted to have found Bev Beales at Bevistan diary, just 32 miles away, whose wonderful flock provide the good stuff. 🐑 🐑🐑

You win some you lose some! I think it needs to be that way, we learn so much from the losses, they also serve to make the wins taste so much sweeter.

We used to make a white label product for Crosstown but it all went sour and we now happily no longer do. This happened way back but we still find ourselves with an oddly large amount of their branded pint tub lids in our warehouse and they need to go. They stiffed us for about £24k by doing one of those pre-packaged bankruptcy things where all the suppliers, employers and HMRC get done over (in that order I believe) and the customer is none the wiser with no pause in trading and no changing in branding. Anyway, we are well over that and have moved very onward, we just need to shift these darn cups. Like the time, when we gave away all the ice cream we had made for them to good causes, it will be nice to do something in the same vein here so here we go;

Come by either shop and when you place your order and say  ‘crosstown don’t pay their bills’, or some sentence of your own creation, and you will have you ice cream(s) served in an inverted Crosstown lid and receive 10% off your order (not valid for cones obviously)! Both shops.

We have thousands upon thousands so this should be able to go on for a number of weeks : )

Rhubarb. One of my all time favourites. I love it with vanilla, I adore it with rose. Cardamom, orange, wasabi and so many more wonderful ingredients that really make it sing.
It gives me great delight to be harvesting our first ever batch on our very own little farm in Girton! ❤️

CORNISH CITRUS!!

I am so unbelievably excited about this. Lemons and limes grown on this very island!!
Grown by the wonderful Simon and Charlotte on Curgurrel Farm jn Cornwall and without any supplemental heat. In season November to March/April. Super fresh, ripened on the tree and never waxed. Not only that but they grow Meyer lemons; an incredible lemon and mandarin cross. Yes, yes, yes!! 🍋🍦

CHRISTMAS! We have a new JG advent tradition, launching today. 1 carapina given away(the large cylindrical containers we scoop from) each day for the next 24 days. Free standard size tiny scoop per person, cup or cone. Just come to our All Saints shop and either ask for it directly or simply say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. Can be combined with additional scoops but please be assured that there is absolutely no expectation for you to buy anything, it’s not what this is about.

We will have enough for approximately 120 scoops per day. There will be a new flavour each day and what it is will be a surprise. Come get it.🎄🎁🍦

HIDDEN TREASURE.

The thrill of the hunt, the deciphering of clues, the excitement of finding something tucked away! One of the few clear memories I have from childhood are the magical Easter Egg hunts. Why should such fun be only for children? It shouldn’t!

I am going to hide ice creams, in the form of Cone Coins, around Cambridge and perhaps further afield too. Here and there, now and then, whenever I have the inclination and the opportunity.

I will use what3words or a google pin to give a location that will be within a few meters of the coins. I will start with fairly easy and then progress from there.

I will post each new hunt as a pinned comment to this post. I will also mention each new one on stories too. Please reply to the comment when you have found a coin so that other people are not seeking that which has already been found. If more than one coin is hidden in the same place then do the right thing and just take one : )

Don’t put yourself at risk while playing and naturally we are unable to accept any liability for anything that may befall you during play! Don’t trespass (some coins may be hidden in places where you need permission to enter). Does this cover us from a legal perspective? I hope so. Let me know. Cone Coins can be traded in at either shop and have no expiry date.

What a year it’s been! We have settled into our beautiful new production unit and you have kept us busier than ever!

In the background we have been bringing our agricultural dreams into reality. This was originally slated for spring 2026 but that seemed too far away and my impatience got the better or me. It’s been a magical journey seeing seedlings push their way into this world and witnessing honey bees raise their brood and increase the size of their colony several fold. I could watch them for hours. Hopefully one day I will give myself the time to do so.

This is our wonderful neighbour Pete Freeman who, amongst other things, very kindly prepared our growing area for us (we do not plan on tilling the earth in future but given that nothing had been done with this land for decades this was required as a first step) back in the Spring. Lots more has happened since then. Definitely got caught up in the moment and didn’t take as many photos as I should but there are a few more that I look forward to sorting through and sharing on stories…

-My thoughts on waiting for a sensible time to start a new project; Don’t wait! Now is usually the best time!-
