Do People Truly Support Local Independent Bars and Restaurants?

Supporting local independent bars and restaurants has become something of a social badge of honour. Many people proudly proclaim their love for the small, quirky spots that offer unique menus, a sense of community, and a level of care you rarely find in chain establishments. But when the chips are down—or worse, overcooked—how many truly stick with their local favourites?

The reality is often less heartwarming than we’d like to admit. A minor inconvenience—perhaps a slower-than-usual service, a dish that doesn’t quite hit the mark, or even an unfamiliar booking process—can send diners retreating to the comfort of chains. It’s easy to blame habit: the chains are everywhere, consistent (even if uninspired), and require little thought. For many, it’s an automatic choice to fall back on when things aren’t perfect.

But that’s the problem. Local independents aren’t just offering food or drinks; they’re contributing to the character and economy of a community. They pour their heart into their work, crafting menus and experiences that are as individual as they are. To expect perfection every time is unrealistic, and running back to chains at the first sign of trouble undermines the very essence of what makes these places special: their individuality.

What we need is patience and loyalty. Mistakes happen, even in the best-run establishments. Instead of walking away, take a moment to give your feedback face-to-face at the time. This gives the team an immediate chance to address the issue and improve, showing that you value their efforts and want them to succeed.

Chains thrive on convenience, but independents thrive on connection. By sticking with your local independents, you’re doing more than buying a meal you’re investing in creativity, diversity, and the soul of your community. Next time you’re tempted to head to a chain for a predictable meal, pause and ask yourself: could your loyalty make all the difference to a local business fighting to stay unique in a world of uniformity?
