The Burnley Wood Conservative Club and Institute Union was formed in 1876, a tea party at St Stephens church, the first meeting place was above the launder

ette on Branch Road and they stayed there for a few years until they had out grown their premises so then they moved onto Waterloo road for another few years and in 1891 the decision was made to move into a purpose built building on the corner of Brunswick Street and Branch Road where we still remain today. The Club has been through 4 alterations since then, in 1958 they took the shop front out and rebuilt the wall with stone brick and put 2 windows and double doors in which are still there today. Between 1975 and 1981, the club were extended into the stewards house to make into a games room which is now the snooker room and a massive alteration of the club has ended mostly what it looks like today,

in 1991 the bar was moved from the center of the room which is now the L shape to the back of the club for easy access to the cellar and in 1993, the club bought the house next door and knocked through to make another games room and offices upstairs.

It is with sadness to announce that our Honorary member, former Committee man and President David Tierney passed away at home at the age of 76.

A member since 1977, David was a regular Tuesday and Thursday night man, always timing him to the clock where he would sit and enjoy his reminiscing about the good old days! Also his love of music when anyone would put music that he knew on the Jukebox he would he happily singing away to himself. David held a fountain of knowledge of the club and it's members past and present, together with his late father Bernard he held a position as a Committee member where he used to go round selling raffles, football cards and once a bingo caller upstairs, he would do anything to help the club in his capacity aswell as putting his name up for anything regarding the Conservative cause.

An eccentric character and a club man to the core with his classic phrase when anyone used to ask him are you alright David "I keep telling you I haven't been right for years! But I admit it!"

David will be having a private cremation on Monday 29th June as his wishes were not to have a funeral, he also made arrangements for money to be left over the bar for people to have a drink on him and possibly have pie and peas on for food on the day for anyone wishing to attend.

Susan Ann Greenhalgh (Big Sue)

It is with sadness to announce that our beloved member, butty queen and recently appointed Concert Secretary Sue Greenhalgh passed away in Blackburn Hospital on the 5th June at the age of 65 with Baz and Andy at her bedside.

First a lady member then becoming a full member in 2024, Big Sue has been a regular face of the club on a daily basis for many years, always with a gleaming smile on her face and a very sociable character, ready to help anyone with anything, together with Baz they attended every function the club held, and when elected onto the Committee this year, Sue accepted the role to become Concert Secretary, a role in which the upcoming months the singers and bands that are booked this year are testament to her love and efforts.

A courageous soul, sadly taken and deeply loved by many.

Sue's funeral will take place on Monday 22nd June, Cortege will leave her home for a moments pause at the club, then onto service at Burnley Crematorium at 3:15, wake back at the club, dress in bright clothes, no black.
