Last week we hosted our summer wine and cheese night, and this one was a little different.

We were honoured for have both Liberty Wines and Tanners Wines with us as our guests blind tasted wine to choose their favourite.

Cheeses from Harvey and Brockless chosen by Emma Woodhouse. First up was Monte Enebro, a world-renowned dense goats cheese from Spain, a cheese that the family have been producing since the 80s.

Karen from Liberty paired The Holy Snail - a wine celebrated for offering old world elegance with juice, fruit forward flavours from Domaine Joel Delaunay in the Loire Valley.

Hannah from Tanners went for a dry, aromatic white from Moldova, blending local indigenous grapes to produce a floral and fresh wine with good minerality.

Liberty won the round by two points.

Next up we devoured Mimolette - a French cows milk cheese celebrated for its vibrant orange colour and mite-eating rind (yes you heard that right!). Sharp and salty, our suppliers had the task of pairing the perfect red.

From Liberty we had a Cabernet Sauvignon from Chateau Los Boldos - full-bodied and well structured - an excellent pairing. Whilst Tanners went for a French carignan - a fruit forward easy drinking red.

It was equal scoring.

And then onto the final round with Liberty 2 points in the lead.

Both suppliers chose a Sicilian pud wines to go with Mrs Blue - a Yorkshire cheese from Shepherds Purse - a cheese that’s won over 70 awards nationally and Internationally.

Liberty chose a sweet fortified white from Curatolo Arini 1875. Established in 1875 (clues in the name), it’s one of the oldest family owned Marsala producers, blending local grapes to produce a soft and supple wine with notes of nuts and honey. Tanners went for a fascinating wine using late-harvested Grillo grapes from talented wine makers Bruno Fina.

Two very different wines from the same region - Liberty took the wine by two points.

Thank you both for joining us, it was one of the best wine and cheese nights yet. We can’t wait to do another versus night next year!

Behind every great Head is a Sous Chef who has their back.

Chef Tom has been with us since day one, and is the backbone of our kitchen. He leads the team and supports Chef Pete every single day.

Thank you for keeping Pete in line, and for cooking exceptional food that our guests come back for every service.

Every day we see the passion and dedication from our team to bring our vision to life - creating a place our guests truly love to eat and drink.

We never set out chasing awards, so when we see our name appear up in lights at a ceremony, it genuinely means the world.

Last night was one of those moments.

Pete Jackson was crowned Pub Restaurant Chef of the Year at Craft Guild of Chefs - the chefs’ Oscars, and an evening attended by more than 700 of the very best chefs in the country.

To see our Head Chef up on that stage, recognised among such incredible talent, made us unbelievably proud.

Moments like this remind us how special our team are, and how lucky we are to have them.

Pete - you are an absolute force. Congratulations ✨

The weather might be doing its own thing, but we’re not waiting for sunshine - summer has officially launched.

Our new menu is full of dishes we enjoy eating, pub classics done right.

Red pepper and tomato soup, grilled sardines, sticky pork belly, padron peppers, Cornish lamb, Loch duart salmon Caesar, beef short rib, lemon sole, the steak and frites you loved throughout spring has made its way on the menu - and then there’s all the new puds too.

It’s a good one, check it out, link in bio, and pop by this week.
