💩🏆 AUGUST'S SH*TEST SHIRT HAS BEEN CROWNED! 🏆💩

Massive congrats to Kev B, who absolutely ROMPED home in August's S**t Shirt Sunday vote! 👏🤣

Out of a record 17 entrants, Kev's magnificent leather-harness-and-hairy-chest ensemble pulled in a whopping 47 votes, making him our clear August champion! 🥇

Now... I couldn't help noticing that quite a few of those votes came from people who don't actually follow The Royston page. 🤔😂

Of course, there's absolutely no evidence whatsoever that Kev was out on the campaign trail, sharing his photo around and desperately canvassing friends and family for votes...

But we have our suspicions. 👀🤣

Still, all's fair in love, war and S**t Shirt Sunday. 💩

No correct… well at least no valid correct answers on FB this week.

The clues were Leeds castle (in Maidstone, Kent) flying an Invicta Kent flag with 5 hopping bunnies in front of it. Giving you ‘Five Hop’ from Kent Brewery 👍🏻

This is a one off special brew celebrating 50 different single hop brews. They’ve chosen their top 5 hops from the UK, US, NZ and even France! 🇫🇷

I’m getting Prohibition vibes from this one, which is up there with some of our favourite beers. Hoppy with a lovely bitter finish 👌

Sorry for the late post today. It's been a funny old week, and one I'll be glad to see the back of.

The rain yesterday was most welcome as it really seems to have cleared the air. Hopefully today might clear my head too! 😵‍💫

It's been one of those weeks where I've had about 47 things going on at once, so I'm VERY ready for a pint and the weekend.

But before I get one... there's the small matter of this week's MYSTERY 5TH CASK! 🍺

After last week's slightly convoluted clue, I've gone back to basics with this one.

Or have I? 🤔

There's really not much I can say without giving the game away, so I'll leave you to work out what these little fellas are trying to tell you. 🐇

🎉🥳 OUR 5TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY IS COMING... AND WE'VE GOT A CHALLENGE FOR YOU! 🥳🎉

The Royston was named after my dad, Roy, and on 9th September 2021 – what would have been his birthday – we opened our doors for the very first time. 🍻

Next month, The Royston turns 5 YEARS OLD! 🥳

So on Saturday 12th September, we'd love you to come and celebrate with us in true Royston style.

When I first opened the pub back in 2021, I wore a waistcoat inspired by Peaky Blinders. It was the same outfit I'd worn at my dad's Peaky Blinders-themed funeral, so it had a special meaning to me 💙

Before long, James and the rest of the team joined in, and waistcoats gradually became part of The Royston's identity.

So for our 5th anniversary, we're setting you a challenge...

🎨 THE ROYSTON'S CRAFTY 5TH ANNIVERSARY CHALLENGE!

Make one from scratch, customise an old favourite or simply dig out the wackiest waistcoat you can find. We want to see what you can come up with!

The answer was...

🕺🪶 Elvis the Seagull 🪶🕺

A collaboration between our friends at Elusive Brewing in Berkshire and Neptune Brewery from Liverpool.

A bit of a departure for Elusive too. They're best known for brewing beautifully bright beers you can see right through, but this time they've teamed up to produce a juicy, hazy pale ale.

The clues were fairly straightforward...

👑 NEPTUNE hiding behind the boat... aka ELUSIVE.

🪶 A SEAGULL sporting an ELVIS wig and sunglasses.

From Elusive themselves...

"A collab a long time in the making! We were thrilled to finally welcome our friends from Neptune down to Finchampstead to brew this super tasty Hazy Pale Ale. We went big on the peach here, pairing Peacharine with Wai-Iti for an all New Zealand hop bill. A peachy yeast adds to the layers of flavour and aroma. Elvis? He's left the building."

Sorry for the late reveal today. It's been one of those days dealing with some important family matters and, if I'm honest, I was in need of a pint by the time I got back! 🍺😅

Thankfully this one absolutely hit the spot.

HAPPY FIRKIN FRIDAY! 🍻

Well, it's the final day of The Official Broadstairs Folk Week ®. What a week it's been! Fantastic weather, brilliant music, Morris dancers everywhere and, as always, a pub full of smiling faces. ❤️

It was only the other day I was chatting to someone about this heatwave and remembering the long summer holidays back in the 80s, when it felt like every single day was a beach day. 🏖️ Whether that's true or just nostalgia talking, who knows... but let's make the most of this sunshine while we've got it! 😎

Last Friday we put Firkin Friday on hold to launch Folk Week in style with our one of only eight casks of Gadds' Chairman of the Board. Done in just three days!... Helped along in no small part by Mark from the BLACK SWAN Morris dancers, and our own American Mike! 🤪🍺

Last weekend we even had six casks on to keep up with the thirsty folkers. Now we're back to our usual four... which means the return of the mystery cask! 🥳

I absolutely love this week's clue. It feels very fitting after a week of seaside celebrations and the Water Gala. 🌊

It's also one of the easier ones, so I'll only give you this...

👀 It's a collaboration between two breweries that regularly feature on our beer board.

🎻 One of the highlights of The Official Broadstairs Folk Week ® for us is always welcoming back our friends from the BLACK SWAN Morris side 🖤🦢

They first discovered The Royston in 2023 and have made us their go-to watering hole ever since. During Folk Week you'll usually find them most evenings gathered around the tables outside, keeping themselves well refreshed between dances. 🍻

We're genuinely honoured that they've made it something of a tradition to spend their Friday evening with us before kicking off their Folk Week at The Royston on the Saturday.

They perform their first dance here at 12pm today, before heading off to the seafront and bandstand to entertain the crowds.

It was brilliant seeing them all last night... although I suspect there may be a few sore heads this morning. 🤪🍺 Perhaps GADDS' Ramsgate Brewery Chairman of the Board had something to do with that... At 8.5% it definitely sneaks up on you before putting you in a Chairman's chokehold!

If you've never seen the Black Swans before, come along for midday and help us give them a proper Royston welcome. It's the perfect way to start Folk Week! 🎻🍻

🚨 The wait is over... Gadds' Chairman of the Board is ON! 🍺

Our cask of this 8.4% Barrel Aged Barley Wine has just been tapped to celebrate the start of The Official Broadstairs Folk Week ® ! 🎻

Brewed just once a year for Gadds' annual Chairman's Summer Beer Festival, hosted by the main man Eddie Gadd, this year's release is particularly special...

Only EIGHT casks were racked, so we're incredibly lucky to have secured one here at The Royston. 🍻

For anyone who's never tried a barley wine before, don't let the name fool you... it's beer, not wine! Rich, full-bodied and wonderfully warming, with a strength more akin to a glass of wine than your average pint. Expect layers of caramel, dried fruit, oak and a long, satisfying finish.

As Eddie puts it:

"Each year the recipe for CotB changes a little and so does the label colour scheme. The beer is in remembrance of our lovely Chairman, Dave Green, who passed away in 2020. He was my father-in-law. The colour schemes are taken from Manchester United shirts - his team.

This year's vintage is a deep ruby, from double crystallised malts. Hops are East Kent Goldings and Fuggles."

If you've been waiting all year to try this, don't hang about... I have a feeling this one won't be around for long! 💨 It's bloody lovely!

We're open midday till 11pm every day of the festival, so if you're in Broadstairs we'd love to welcome you for one of the best selections of real ale and cider in town. 🍺❤️
