Stay safe by the water during the hot weather ☀️🌊
With the warm weather continuing, we know many people will be heading to Brixham’s beaches, harbour and coastline to cool off and enjoy the sea. Whether you’re spending time at Breakwater Beach, Fishcombe or around the Brixham coastline, please take care around the water.
Even on the hottest days, the sea around the UK stays cold enough to cause cold water shock. This can affect anyone — even strong swimmers — and can make it difficult to breathe, swim or stay afloat.
A few simple ways to stay safe:
• Enter the water slowly and give your body time to adjust
• Avoid jumping straight in, especially in unfamiliar spots
• Stay within your depth and keep a close eye on children at all times
• If you get into trouble in the water, Float to Live – tilt your head back, keep your ears submerged, relax and control your breathing
• Where possible, choose a lifeguarded beach and always check local conditions before heading in
Please also be aware of tides, slippery slipways, harbour edges and exposed rocks, particularly if you’re exploring the coastline or heading out onto the beach as the tide goes out. Conditions can change quickly, so take extra care and keep well back from harbour walls and cliff edges.
If you see someone in trouble in the sea, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
