☕️ Café Rhubarb 🍰
The day is nearing, the very sad day when we see Mandy Stone have to say goodbye to her beloved & very successful café. Café Rhubarb has become a hub for so many local people over the past 14 years and has a feel like no other café on the Gloucester Road.
Where else can you get that sense of a home away from home, a safe warm place, where you can just come and hang out, without fear of overstaying your welcome? If you were lucky, you’d also get some free entertainment thrown in, when Mr Rhubarb (AKA Dave) would be serving up drinks and running tables, with the finest singing, joking & theatrics, Dave and his daughter Bayleigh also made the ‘best in the West fully loaded Milkshakes’!
In a time where we’re seeing fewer and fewer family run independent businesses, due to large corporations & chains being allowed to move in, Mandy’s café provided a place where you felt comfortable sitting and chatting with a friend, or even on your own, with so much art and memorabilia, a magazine rack, a perfect viewing point to people watch and an old school no wifi environment with a friendly personal touch. Throw a bar in there and you’d get Bristol’s answer to the ‘Cheers Bar’, where you’d “like to get away, every body knows your name and they’re always glad you came”. 🎵 🎶
The new proprietors intend to run the café in a similar way, it’s fantastic that they too are a family run business and I hope that we can all support them and hopefully even have the chance to share a coffee there with lady Rhubarb who has kept us all so well nourished and cared for over the years.
All the best to Mandy & Dave for happy times ahead, that you finally get to live life and enjoy days without recovering from the aches and pains of tending to everyone else’s needs and to finally reap the benefits of a job ‘very well done’. 👏🏼
Thank you for all your years of hard graft making the Gloucester Road that little bit more colourful and family friendly. I am proud to say that both my children have known and loved Mandy and Dave with me all their lives and I’m one of the lucky one’s to whom the Gloucester Road brought ‘friends for life’ the day I walked into their café.
Please get in and wish them all the best if you’re passing by over the next week, and try those delights before they handover forever.
🩷 We love you Mandy! A Bristol legend AKA Mrs Rhubarb / The Queen 😜. 😘🥰
