Our food changes with the season, and is inspired by Japanese techniques and New Nordic traditions. Most of all, we favour substance over style and developing the flavours and textures to celebrate the produce the West has to offer. Our "Bar Bulrush" sits at the back of the restaurant, where we offer a range of cocktails and other drinks to keep the dark nights warm.

As we celebrate ten incredible years, I want to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you. To our amazing suppliers and hardworking staff — your dedication keeps me going every single day. And to all of our wonderful guests who have dined with us over the years, your support, smiles, and loyalty mean more than words can express. We wouldn’t be here without you. Back from a few days on the family farm, and the gooseberries and white, red and blackcurrants are all coming through.

Current plans (forgive the pun) are to lacto ferment the gooseberry for savoury ketchups and chutneys, and ferment the juice to lighten sauces.

With the blackcurrants, nothing does to waste - the juice will be used for pickling, the leaves for ice cream and even the branches will be infused overnight in a warm oven to help extract flavour from wood, making the most delicious oil.

It means so much to me that after ten years tucked away in Cotham, we’re still getting great reviews like this 🙏 Especially at a time when the restaurant industry is facing massive challenges and so many places I’ve known and loved are having to close. Go and support your local restaurant this weekend, it really does make a difference.

Bulrush 🌾 Did you know this space was originally a greengrocers? After living in Japan and running pop-ups out there, I started looking at Bristol as the place to open my own restaurant. It had a brilliant emerging food scene at the time. My dad called one day to say he’d found a little site in Cotham. We opened Bulrush on a shoestring in 2015 and won a Michelin star three years later…and ten years on, we’re still here, still cooking the food we love.
