Our Story
In 1972, the president of Uganda, Idi Amin, announced that all Asians had 90 days to leave their homeland. Among the 60,000 exiles were my parents, and although they only took a single suitcase they brought culture and cooking from two great continents. I was raised with these recipes and now I want to share them with you.

We did it.

Over £20,000 raised in 48 hours. We are completely blown away.

THANK YOU!

The reward tiers are now closed but if you’d still like to support us, donations are very much welcome. Every penny goes straight into getting Kitgum open on 17th June.

No voucher. No reward. Just love and a massive thank you.

14 hours. £14,250. We are overwhelmed.

We put our faith in you. And you came through. Again.

We know times are tough. We know there are a lot of crowdfunders out there. And yet, you showed up. Not once, not twice, but three times. We still can’t believe it.

No banks. No big companies. Just an incredible community and lots of passion.

And that’s not the half of it.

A local businessman, after hearing about our situation, offered us interest free credit, paid back bit by bit. Something he said he just doesn’t do. He nearly made me cry. One customer called and offered to loan us money on a gentleman’s handshake. So so many people offering services, labour, skills, just because they wanted to help.

I’ve welled up more times than I can count.

This is what the Kitgum community looks like. And we will never forget.

If we had any apprehension going into this, it’s completely gone now. We’re ready! The people that matter are backing us. You’ve given us your blessing and we won’t let you down.

We’re keeping it open for a little longer for anyone who still wants to be part of it.

See you at 3 Hampton Place, Brighton BN1 3DA.

Open June 💚

Yesterday was World IBD Day — and my feed was full of people sharing their stories. It was inspiring. So here’s mine.

I don’t normally talk about my health publicly but I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease five years ago and I thought it was time to share.

I may look fine when you see me. But when I’m in a flare I’m most definitely not okay.

Inflammation in my bowels. Chronic bloating so uncomfortable I can barely move. Joint pain all over my body. No appetite. Stomach cramps. No energy. Headaches. The works. I’ve been in and out of hospital for tests. I inject myself weekly with an immunosuppressant which lowers my immune system — with three kids constantly bringing bugs home from school, I get sick constantly and my recovery time can triple.

The biggest trigger, apart from diet, is stress.

I’m in an industry that’s on its knees. I’m in the middle of a restaurant relocation and refit with no income since December, running out of money, and three kids at home. Stress doesn’t cover it. I’ve been in a flare for around five weeks. My inflammation levels are off the scale. On top of the immunosuppressant I’m on an eight week steroid course. The steroids are wrecking my sleep, making me jittery, and affecting my moods in ways I didn’t anticipate. The tiniest thing can trigger a red mist I have to physically leave the room to manage.

Susie and the kids are getting the brunt of it and I hate that. But we keep going. That’s all you can do.

This is life with Crohn’s.

Before I was diagnosed I thought IBD just meant going to the toilet a bit more than usual. It is so much more than that.

SUSIE BATES appreciation time. She hates public affection or the attention… but our tagline is defiantly unauthentic so here’s the defiant in me!

What can I say. She’s bloody amazing.

You see loads of videos on our socials — and they’re all me. Suze is never in them. The other day I said to her, get in the vids! And she was like, no way, people don’t wanna see me, this is your thing.

How wrong can she be.

Without Susie there is no Kitgum. Full stop. We started this together 11 years ago. Went through every single up and every brutal down together. Built a beautiful family and home along the way.

Full time job, three kids, school runs, the house, all of it — while I worked evenings. And anyone with kids knows, even when I’m home they’re hanging off Susie. She never stops.

But this next Kitgum chapter? We need her in it. Properly. Since we got the keys on 30th March she has been absolutely relentless. Project managing the entire build. Every decision, every problem, every late night and early morning. Weekdays, weekends, middle of the night — if it’s about this place, she’s thinking about it.

I know how hard it is. I know how much pressure she’s carrying. And she just gets on with it. No fuss. No drama. Head down.

6 weeks to opening. Money’s tight. Pressure’s on.

But we’re going to do it.

And none of it — none of it — happens without her.

We love you Suze 💚

We’re so chuffed to be included in Brighton’s Best Top 30 Restaurants 2025. Well done to all the kitgum team… it’s been a weird few months with loads of changes and currently no head chef. The team have been working SO hard to make sure everything is still running smoothly! Without our amazing team, Kitgum cannot exist. So again, thank you!

Congrats to everyone who won awards yesterday. We’re definitely in great company!

Thank you to for throwing another great party! My head is very sore. Huge shout to for the delicious food and endless supply of palomas and the much needed hangover brunch this morning!

Head still sore 🥴
