The Great MOSHIMO Vegan Challenge brings Brighton’s most talented chefs together under one roof to create outstanding plant based cuisine, judged by our guests. Now in its second decade, the event has become a highlight of Brighton’s culinary calendar and has been recognised with a prestigious PETA award for its contribution to vegan dining.

As the New Year approaches, we wanted to share this video as a reflective look back at the very beginning, around 25 years ago, when Moshimo was still known as Moshi Moshi and the restaurant was just being built. The footage comes from a TV show broadcast at the time, documenting the building and opening of the restaurant and capturing a moment full of ambition and possibility as the foundations were laid for what would become a Brighton institution. With a new year ahead, it feels like the right time to pause and reflect on how far the journey has come.

Nineteen years ago, Karl joined Nicky as co-owner, and since then the restaurant has gone through many evolutions, adapting and growing in a hospitality landscape that is no longer the same world it once was. Through changing times, challenges, and shifts in the industry, the core values have remained at the heart of everything we do.

Over the years, one of the most amazing parts of this journey has been watching families return time and time again, seeing toddlers grow into teenagers, and even teenagers grow into parents themselves.

To all of our regulars past and present, thank you. It’s your continued support over the years that keeps us motivated, inspired, and working as hard as we do. We wouldn’t be here without you.

Happy New Year from the Moshimo team. We can’t wait to welcome you into the next chapter. 💕

Here are some highlights from Thursday’s Vegan Challenge! Thank you to everyone who came along — since post-lockdown, we weren’t sure if there’d still be interest in this kind of event. Hospitality has changed so much over the past few years, but you proved there’s definitely an appetite for more. And there will be more to come.
