Throwback to 2000 ☕🏆
Twenty-six years ago, our Stuart Archer appeared in the Newcastle Journal with the Coffy Johnny Trophy — the special silver coffee pot we commissioned right here in Blaydon.
We created it to mark the centenary of the famous Tyneside character Coffy Johnny, and it was awarded to the first local lad from Blaydon or Winlaton to finish the race. It was a proud moment for us, especially as we were celebrating our own 250th anniversary at the time.
Even though we no longer present the trophy, we’re still very fond of this piece of our history and the strong connection it gave us to the Blaydon Race — one of the North East’s great traditions.
Tomorrow night, as runners line up once again along the Scotswood Road, we’ll be cheering them all on from Blaydon. Best of luck to every single one of you, especially those running for Blaydon and Winlaton.
Here’s to good running and strong coffee afterwards.
